Green Champion
The Green Champion will lead on the delivery of our user-led sustainability practices, empowering RJ4All and our service users to become a greener, smarter, and more sustainable organisation.
They will engage across the whole organisation and contribute to increasing the knowledge and awareness about sustainability issues, including at our community centre with local service users through our gardening and growing club initiatives, and within the Rotherhithe area through our large network of sustainability partners.
They will champion improvements in the organisation’s environmental overall performance. The role is voluntary with in-kind returns and separate from any current job responsibilities.
The appointment will last for 6 months and can be renewable. The role will be overseen by the Project Officer who will in turn be reporting to the UK Project Manager on a monthly basis.
About RJ4All
Restorative Justice for All (RJ4All) is a charitable, user-led international institute with a vision of a world that embraces the restorative justice values, and where power abuse is no longer.
We pursue our vision by using the power of dialogue, education, sports and art, as well as the practices and values of restorative justice such as power sharing, fairness, equality, dignity and respect.
RJ4All has a mission to address poverty and advance equality, community cohesion and human rights. We pursue our mission by delivering social justice and poverty relief projects, educational programmes and youth clubs, intercultural dialogue, internships and high-quality volunteering opportunities to the most marginalised groups of society.
As part of our mission, we set off on a journey to build the world's first restorative justice post-code creating an evidence-based case study for other to follow.
Our Focus
We focus on building better and more effective social justice systems by working locally, nationally and internationally through the redistribution of power. Founded in 2010 by Dr. Theo Gavrielides, RJ4All is now recognised as the leading, international restorative justice network with members from over 40 countries.
We work in partnership with decision makers, making evidence-based arguments to achieve long-term change. To this end, we carry out research and give voice to under-represented groups.
RJ4All is a fast-growing NGO with an impact that is being recognised locally, nationally and internationally. Our last few years’ Impact Reports show not only the need for the work that we do, but also the gap that exists in the way we do it.
RJ4All is also the manager of the RJ4All Rotherhithe Community Centre, which has become a hub of community empowerment. Our Centre offers a holistic approach to addressing poverty and community tensions through a food-bank, a community fridge, free sports classes, a digital hub, free youth clubs, and educational workshops to children, young people and professionals. It is also a safe place for anyone who wants to pop in for a coffee, use our facilities or just chat with our interns, volunteers and team. RJ4All has three additional arms: RJ4All Publications (publishing arm), RJ4All Sports (fitness arm) and RJ4All e-courses (training arm).
Time commitment
The anticipated time commitment required for this role is around 2 hours per week minimum and comes in addition to currently contracted, paid hours if applicable. This may fluctuate and be flexible according to project and organisation priorities.
Key tasks

To lead on the implementation and embedding of RJ4All Green Policy and Key Principles.

To foster intergenerational community connections and positive wellbeing in partnership with Project Officer, through delivery of gardening and growing initiatives at the Centre.

To drive cultural change practices and projects to incorporate sustainability thinking into the decision making, actions and learning across the organisation.

To promote sustainability, encourage effective resource use and leading by example to help colleagues and service users do the same. This will include focusing on (a) reducing carbon footprint (b) using more reusable energy (c) reducing fuel poverty in SE16 and addressing power imbalances (d) increasing environmental awareness and changing attitudes within our local community (e) reducing waste through reduction, recycling and reuse. This will also include educating staff and service users to get up to speed with current policies and practices relating to sustainability.

To encourage basic best behaviours and ensure implementation by centre staff, including turning off lights in unused rooms, minimising air conditioning usage in the gym, turn-off heaters, electronic equipment and power sockets when not used.

To take care of plants located in and outside of the community centre.

To work in partnership with Project Officer to produce materials and educational resources for the wider community and RJ4All network, including through our various communication channels where relevant.

To organise workshops for staff or service users and decide on an annual sustainability day with activities and events at the Rotherhithe Community Centre.

To join and contribute to local sustainability and energy networks, meetings and events for opportunities to collaborate on projects and to learn more about sustainability issues in the local area.

To report and keep Project Officer up to date on progress and activities.

To collect feedback from members of staff, service users, and community members on sustainability matters. This include actively collecting ideas, questions, concerns and feed these back to the Project Officer.

To adhere to any allocated budget for environmental initiatives, obtaining advance line manager approval for expenses and submitting reimbursement requests in line with RJ4All Expenses Policy.

To undertake all tasks respecting RJ4All’s Equality and Diversity Policy as well as its founding values;

To comply with the RJ4All’s Handbook and European Commission’s grant agreements;

To work co-operatively with other RJ4All staff and Board members;

To attend relevant training in order to fulfil the requirements of the role;

To co-operate in the formulation of and development of systems for monitoring and evaluating the sustainability work of RJ4All;

To treat with confidentiality any information about RJ4All members, users, staff and research that could be deemed as personal, private or sensitive;

To undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Director.
