CLINKS NEWS: Clive in the Guardian
Clive wrote about the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms for the Guardian yesterday: "We need concrete assurances when the competition opens to ensure that prime providers will be encouraged to minimise the amount of risk they pass down the supply chain. And for many small organisations, wait-and-see won't be an option either. These proposed contracts could last at least seven to ten years, with no opportunities for new partners to come in at "refresh points". Again, few small businesses can afford to stick it out for a decade with their core market closed off to them, let alone voluntary organisations." Read Clive's piece here
CLINKS BLOG: Transforming rehabilitation and police and crime commissioners
Jess Mullen who managed Clinks' Safer Future Communities project, to support the VCSE Sector to engage with PCCs, examines what the relationship between PCCs and transforming rehabilitation will be and what the implications for the Sector are. Read Jess' blog here
CLINKS EVENT: supporting people with multiple needs
'Improving support for people with multiple needs' is a Making Every Adult Matter conference [9th December, London, from £125] that will bring together those working to tackle substance misuse, mental ill health, homelessness, and offending alongside those with direct experience to explore how to improve the support provided to people with multiple needs. At the event you will: hear from leading politicians, funders, policy makers, service users and commissioners; be inspired by effective coordinated approaches and local practice that works; explore positive examples of service models and systems change; and build connections with other organisations working in the criminal justice, substance misuse, homelessness and mental health sectors. Book your place here
CLINKS MEMBERS' NEWS: Members shortlisted for prestigious awards
Congratulations to Clinks Members Prisoners' Education Trust, St Petrocks (Exeter) Ltd., Working Chance, and Yorkshire and Humberside Circles of Support and Accountability for being shortlisted in this year's Guardian Charity Awards. We wish them the best of luck for the award ceremony in early December. A previous winner of this award was Clinks Member Unlock. Find out more about the shortlisted organisations here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: new MoJ process to promote yourself to primes
Ministry of Justice have invited potential Tier 2 and Tier 3 providers to complete an Expression of Interest form to promote themselves to prime providers. The process closes on 31st October. Read Clive's new blog to find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Transforming Rehabilitation PQQ opens for prime providers
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has launched its competition to find the prime providers of the 21 Community Rehabilitation Companies (CRCs) who will deliver rehabilitation services in England and Wales as set out in the Government’s Transforming Rehabilitation Strategy. The Transforming Rehabilitation competition will continue through 2014 with contracts being awarded and mobilised by 2015. For more information, click here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: broadcasting from courts
Live television broadcasting in courts, for the first time, is one step closer after receiving final approval in the House of Commons last week. From next month, broadcasting will be allowed for criminal and civil cases in the Court of Appeal, where filming of the legal arguments and the final judgment will be allowed. The proposals will now be debated in the House of Lords prior to coming into effect in October. Clinks Member Victim Support argue that televising court cases could make giving evidence even more stressful and intimidating for witnesses. Read more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: summary of evidence review published
'Transforming Rehabilitation: a summary of evidence on reducing reoffending' is a new publication from MoJ that reviews the evidence on reducing reoffending. It summarises key evidence on approaches to offender management and how to work effectively with offenders, and then considers the evidence on specific interventions such as drug and alcohol treatment, offender behaviour programmes, mentoring and restorative justice. Download it here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: inspection of adult offending work
HM Inspectorate of Probation will be inspecting work in Norfolk and Suffolk, with a focus on Protecting Children, during the weeks commencing 11th November 2013 and 25th November 2013. Local providers who work with people supervised by the Probation Trust, or with victims, may be contacted by a probation inspector to discuss their work. If you have any queries about this, please email HMI Probation's admin mailbox
FUNDING: for social welfare organisations
Comic Relief has re-launched its UK Grants Programme with new themes. Charities registered in the UK and other not-for-profit organisations can apply for grants starting from £10,000 a year for three years if their work benefits people in the UK. Applications should address one of Comic Relief’s new themes, which are: Better futures for vulnerable young people aged 11 to 24; Healthier finances by supporting those who are experiencing severe financial hardship; Safer lives by supporting people who face violence, abuse and exploitation; Stronger communities; Fairer society by empowering and giving voice to marginalised groups of people. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: new Clean Break play
'Billy the Girl' is a new Clean Break play [29th October to 24th November, Soho Theatre, from £10] in which a fractured family deals with a lifetime of mistrust. Billy returns to her childhood home to try to turn her life around for the better. But first she has to come to terms with the way her family betrayed her over a childhood mistake that they called a crime. As she challenges her family to see her for who she really is, a secret from the past draws all their relationships into question. Find out more and book your place here
NON-MEMBERS EVENTS & TRAINING
- 'Finding our voice: Speaking up for women in prison' | 15th October, London, free | RSVP
GOVERNANCE: trustees' week
Trustees' Week [4th - 10th November] is an annual event to showcase the great work that trustees do and highlight opportunities for people from all walks of life to get involved and make a difference. Trustees play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to make important decisions about the charity's work. There are loads of resources, events news and information available here
GOVERNANCE: get your accounts in on time
The Directory of Social Change has published a report where they asked funders whether they check the Charity Commission website for information on registered charities who have made applications. The Charity Commission highlights groups whose accounts arrive late on its website by adding a red border to their entry. Half the funders said they checked the Charity Commission records, and of those 17 per cent would immediately reject applications from charities which had not submitted their accounts on time. Find out more here
PUBLICATION: surviving austerity
'Surviving austerity' is a nef report that found the welfare state no longer provides a safety net for the most vulnerable in society; unemployed people are facing a 'job trap' - stuck in a cycle of low-paid, precarious work and life on benefits; and local government cuts have all but killed the government's vision of a 'Big Society'. Download the report here
OPPORTUNITY: for young community leaders
NCVYS is looking for 30 young people in England aged 18-25, who are interested in social action, to be part of the Active Citizens programme. Active Citizens is a community empowerment and social action programme that builds lasting partnerships between communities in the UK and others around the world.
