If you haven't done so, please make sure you take ten minutes today to add your experience. CLINKS NEWS: using dance to work with offenders
The first event of Arts Alliance's peer learning series [14th August, London] will offer a unique opportunity to learn from leading dance company Dance United and their award-winning Academy Programme. Dance United use intensive contemporary dance training to help transform the lives of young people who are marginalised, affected by poverty, social inequality, crime or lack of opportunity. This event aims to enable delegates working in the field to discover more about this effective approach to inform their own practice and approach to working with offenders through the arts. Book your place here
CLINKS NEWS: new Chair for MEAM coalition
The Making Every Adult Matter (MEAM) coalition is delighted to announce the appointment of Baroness Tyler as Chair. Throughout her career, Baroness Tyler has focused on supporting excluded and disadvantaged individuals. Baroness Tyler brings her broad experience to the newly created position of Chair, where she will support MEAM staff and the Chief Executives of Clinks, DrugScope, Homeless Link and Mind in their joint work to improve outcomes for people facing multiple problems such as homelessness, substance misuse, mental health problems and offending. CLINKS BRIEFING: on Justice Select Committee's findings on women offenders
In 2012, the Justice Select Committee began an inquiry to review the progress made since the Corston Report by examining current policy and practice relating to women offenders and those at risk of offending. The Justice Select Committee has now published its findings in 'Women Offenders: after the Corston Report'. This makes a series of recommendations to ensure that the distinct needs of women in the CJS (and those at risk) are recognised and met at both the national and local level. This Clinks briefing gives a summary of the Committee’s headline recommendations. Download it here
CLINKS MEMBER'S REQUEST: women facing injustice due to privatisation of services
'Woman vs State' is a Kazuri book project to highlight the systemic injustices against women arising out of the steady privatisation of public services. Kazuri believe the stories of those whose health and wellbeing has been sold for private profit deserve to be told, and are seeking personal stories of women who have experience of private companies contracted to deliver public services. They want to hear from women with experience of the criminal justice system, exile, secure hospitals, domestic violence shelters and SARCs. If you're interested, please email Sarah Cheverton or Nanki Chawla
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Justice Secretary talks about the Sector
You can watch Justice Secretary Chris Grayling speaking about the opportunities for the VCSE in the Transforming Rehabilitation agenda. He speaks about a wide range of organisations who are passionate about their work and critical to reducing reoffending. Watch the 20 minute video here

Programmes should be youth-led and should be able to show how young people have helped to shape programme design. Funding can be used to finance programme delivery costs and core organisational costs. There is a budget of £3 million for this fund. RESOURCE: new maturity guide for probation staff
The Transition to Adulthood (T2A) Alliance and the University of Birmingham have published a new guide for probation practitioners to help them take account of maturity when completing an assessment of needs and risks for young adult offenders aged 18-24. Earlier this year, the practice guide was trialled with the two largest probation areas; London Probation Trust and Staffordshire and West Midlands Probation Trust. It was found that, by using the guide, probation staff could strengthen the quality and effectiveness of Pre-Sentence Reports (PSRs) and proposals to sentencers. As well as explaining what maturity means in a criminal justice context, the guide poses a series of questions that will help practitioners to make a sound judgement about a young adult’s level of maturity. Find out more here

The research is based on the advice and experiences of 50 homeless people who have moved into work, who Broadway interviewed at regular intervals over their first 6-12 months in work.
