Join ClinksUntil August 2012 the Disability Times Trust was Chaired by the late Rt Hon Lord Morris of Manchester (the UK’s first minister for disabled people). It was set up in 1996 in response to the equalities work carried out by the Disability Times Newspaper and to provide employment advisory services to disabled people. The newspaper became a reference point for disabled people nationally and was received by MPs and decision makers in Westminster, informing the development of the Disability Discrimination Act. By 1999 the Trust had built on its burgeoning reputation by training disabled people in publishing and media skills. Skills development contracts with the Government Office for London and contracts with the DWP, LDA and LSC led to engagement with other disadvantaged groups.

Supporting information
The Citizens Trust has been operating in west London since 1996 and provides a range of support services for offenders. Using a case management approach, these include IAG, vocational training with pastoral support and personal development. In partnership with the London Probation Trust, we have an ‘Offender Hub’ actually based at our premises, staffed by Probation Officers. This provides offenders with a one-stop facility, enabling them to access the support services offered by the Trust via direct referral.
In addition to working with offenders in the community, the Trust has been operating prisoner training programmes in HMP Wormwood Scrubs since 2006. These have included graphic design and media courses. Recently, we became the first organisation in England permitted to set up a CSCS test centre (now known as the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test) in a prison (HMP Wormwood Scrubs), which operates in tandem with the new CSCS test centre here at our Ealing premises.
