National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance News: Anne Peaker Lecture 2026
This year, 150 people joined us at BBC Broadcasting House and via a live webinar for the 2026 Anne Peaker Lecture. We were welcomed into the space with music provided by participants of Finding Rhythms and images from a number of artists, projects and their partners: Bear Face Applied Theatre & HMP/YOI Winchester, Clean Break, Erika Flowers, Give a Book & Prison Reading groups, Hear Me Out, Justice Futures, Novus and Odd Arts.

(Photo shows the event chair Russ Haynes; Iain Haddow our host at the BBC and current Advisor on Radio, Audio and Music in Prisons; Dr Summer Alston-Smith, Clinks CEO; and speaker Professor Shadd Maruna).
To start the event, there were 5 short films by: Prison Reading Group, Ride Out, Clean Break, Hear Me Out and Dance United Yorkshire. The films highlighted their creative work, provided voices on the experience of engaging in the projects and shared powerful messages about the impact of the criminal justice system on individuals and society.
We were then delighted to hear Professor Shadd Maruna from the University of Liverpool, giving the keynote speech: What happens if the art stops? Why sustained access to creativity is a matter of justice. You can watch his lecture on YouTube here
We closed with a drinks reception and time for networking. To summarise the event, artist and NCJAA Advisory Group member Erika Flowers has produced this fantastic illustration:

PUBLICATION: Blood Red Sky
Youth Justice Novel ‘Blood Red Sky’ and Its Ongoing Impact on Work with At-Risk and Care-Experienced Young People

Blood Red Sky by Sara Cullen is a YA novel increasingly being used as a resource across youth justice, education and community contexts. Grounded in the realities of care experience, trauma and youth offending, the book is supporting reflection and discussion among both young people and professionals.
It is currently being introduced in Irish schools and is gaining interest from local authorities in Scotland, with discussions underway to distribute copies across schools and custodial settings. Sara is also working directly with the community, including a recent collaboration with Dundee City Council, delivering workshops that draw on the book to support practitioners working with at-risk, care-experienced, and justice-experienced young people.
The book is closely linked to Arkbound’s Writing Within Walls programme, which provides creative writing mentoring for young people in YOIs and community settings, supporting literacy, confidence and progression pathways.
Please get in touch with Sara Cullen (cullensaraj@gmail.com) or Arkbound (hello@arkbound.com) to explore collaborations, workshops, events, or bulk orders (trade discounts available). Find Blood Red Sky at Arkbound.com or wherever buy your books.
