CLINKS NEWS: an end to discretionary Friday releases
The Offenders (Day of Release from Detention) Act, receiving Royal Assent in June, brings an end to discretionary Friday releases for adult prison leavers in the majority of cases. From Thursday 14 December (yesterday) adult prisoners should be released one working day earlier if scheduled for a Friday or the day before a bank/public holiday. There will be some instances where a person may be eligible for release up to two days earlier. The Policy Framework on Gov.UK sets out the change which aligns with the Government’s pledge in the December 2021 Prisons Strategy White Paper. Offender Management Units will update release dates 14 days in advance.
