In this podcast Transform Justice got Rory together with Stephen Bush of the FT for a brilliant discussion about the politics of criminal justice. Listen here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: All Rise, a video about prisons and work
Beating Time have made a short video about their “Inside Job” employment programme designed by and delivered by people who have served a prison sentence. Prison Governors Paul Newton and Ralph Lubowski allowed Beating Time to take cameras into HMP Birmingham and HMP Hewell. In the film you meet 6 candidates, including two of the men who run Inside Job and some of the companies who are hiring people from prison.
The film, created with a view to share with prospective employers, follows great success over the last two and a half years, with 347 people placed into work and a low reoffending rate of only 5% (based on a ring around of 107 candidates). Around 80% of candidates are still in work after 6 months. Watch the film here and learn more about Beating Time
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Ministry of Justice reshuffle
Earlier this week, the Prime Minister reshuffled his ministerial team, including making some changes to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). This saw the then prisons minister, Damian Hinds, moved to a role in the Department for Education. Following that move, Edward Argar, an existing Minister of State at the MoJ was given the portfolio covering prisons, parole, and probation. Gareth Bacon was appointed as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the MoJ, and he will be responsible for sentencing, including the recently introduced Sentencing Bill. Laura Farris was also appointed as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in both the MoJ and the Home Office, covering the Victims and Safeguarding portfolios. More details about the roles of each minister can be found on the MoJ's website.
