Express your interest in joining the RR3 SIG on Employment
Help build the evidence base, highlight best practice, and find solutions to the barriers to accessing employment for people leaving prison
Calling voluntary sector organisations!
We are calling on voluntary organisations, providing employment-related support to people in the criminal justice system, to join the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3) Special Interest Group (SIG) on Employment. For any questions, or to express your interest in participating, please contact our RR3 Secretariat, Bronte Jack. The deadline for submitting an expression of interest is 7 November.
About the RR3 Employment SIG
The RR3 is made up of senior experts from the voluntary sector. The group meets quarterly with civil servants to provide guidance and feedback on prison and probation policy developments.
The RR3 can also convene time-limited SIGs to explore certain topics in more depth, and to provide a range of practical policy recommendations.
We will be holding an Employment SIG, which will focus on the barriers facing people leaving prison with a criminal record. We want voluntary sector organisations working in this space to join the group. The first session will take place on 21 November.
The SIG will aim to:
- Strengthen the evidence base on barriers to employment, specifically highlighting the challenges faced by people with protected characteristics
- Feed into and advise the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) on initiatives designed to ensure meaningful Education, Training and Employment (ETE) opportunities, both while in prison and upon release
- Highlight existing initiatives-at both a local and national level- that illustrate best practice
- Provide the MoJ with a range of realistic and pragmatic recommendations to boost employment outcomes for people leaving prison.
We have set out areas of focus for potential solutions to barriers in accessing employment:
- High quality workshops preparing people for release
- Better wage structures in prisons
- Increase the range of employers engaging with prisons and hiring people leaving prison
- Supporting people in prison furthest away from the labour market
- A tangible link between the first three points, and a third-party role/provider to provide wraparound support from prison to community.
For any questions, or to express your interest in participating in the SIG, please contact our RR3 Secretariat, Bronte Jack. The deadline for submitting an expression of interest is 7 November 2023.
Expression of interest in the SIG is open to all, and we welcome broad engagement from those working in the sector. Once we have ascertained interest, we will be able to share additional information which explains the functions of this SIG in greater detail.
