CLINKS NEWS: join the RR3 Employment Special Interest Group
Clinks is calling on any voluntary organisation, providing employment-related support to people involved in the criminal justice system, to join the RR3 Employment Special Interest Group. This will focus on the barriers to accessing employment for people leaving prison or people with a criminal record. For any questions, or to express your interest in participating, please contact our RR3 Secretariat, Bronte Jack. The first session will take place on [21 November, 12:00 - 14:00, at Switchback, London]
CLINKS NEWS: register your interest in voluntary sector focus groups
Following our State of the sector survey, we are looking to delve deeper into the current landscape of the criminal justice voluntary sector through focus groups with representatives of a range of voluntary organisations. Participants will have advanced sight of our survey’s findings, directly contribute their voice to our research, and be able to highlight challenges, but also successes, from the last year. Previously, Clinks presented findings from its State of the sector research to senior officials in the Ministry of Justice and HM Prison and Probation Service, and charitable trusts and foundations. The findings also underpin and help shape our influencing work. Clinks is also pleased to be able to offer participating organisations a free place on one of our training sessions. If you would like to take part in one of these focus groups, please register your interest using this form by [30 October].
CLINKS NEWS: Yorkshire and the Humber rehabilitation partnership
Voluntary sector organisations working in the criminal justice system are invited to the Yorkshire and the Humber Rehabilitation Partnership event. [17 October, 10:00-12.30, online via teams]. Following on from a hugely successful event in May, which provided an update from Probation, Prisons and Police and Crime Commissioners, this next event will provide an opportunity to showcase the work of the voluntary sector.
Clinks is inviting organisations to share information about their work and are delighted that St Giles, Clean Slate Solutions, Forward Trust and Mary Magdalene CIC have agreed to speak. Find out more and register here
CLINKS NEWS: NCJAA Writing Development Workshops
The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) is excited to revive its writing development training programme [October 2023 – February 2024, online, free]. Working in partnership with the Royal Literary Fund (RLF), free digital workshops will be held throughout 2022/23 to teach vital writing development skills for reports, case studies, and funding applications.
Starting with Report Writing on [18 October]. Our online training programme will help attendees write reports that convey messages effectively and efficiently. Through writing exercises and discussion, you will discover how to organise information and approach the various stages of producing a report from initial ideas to final draft.
Visit the NCJAA website for information about the workshop programme.

CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Transform Justice podcast
Hosts Rob and Penelope are joined by Phil Bowen, Director for the Centre for Justice Innovation, and Jocelyn Simonson, Professor at Brooklyn Law School. They discuss why problem-solving courts have continued to attract interest, how they measure up to traditional forms of punishment, and where we should focus our efforts if want to reduce crime.
Problem-solving courts have long been hailed as a progressive alternative to traditional punishment. In theory, these experimental courtrooms recognise and address the root causes of crime and humanise those who come into contact with the criminal justice system. And some research shows they lead to better outcomes. But today we ask: are problem-solving courts the answer, or are they a barrier to putting resources where they really need to be? Listen here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: NCVO winter survey
NCVO wants to create better awareness of the extent of the issues facing communities, charities and volunteers. But we can't do it without your help. By filling out our survey you'll be providing us with the evidence we need to call for extra support in the months ahead.
Charities and voluntary sector agencies like yours provide a vital safety net for communities in need. But this winter will put charities under increasing strain and in need of additional support. Please complete the 3-minute winter survey
CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: Prisoners Advice Service annual lecture
The PAS Annual Lecture will be held at Doughty Street Chambers on [9 November, Doughty Street Chambers, London, free].
The focus of the evening will tell prisoners stories through different media, and will feature panellists, Emmy winner, Jimmy McGovern, and Bafta nominee, Helen Black, who have co-written the second series of BBC prison drama, Time. Former PAS Co-Director, Deborah Russo will also join the panel to reflect on her experience dramatising her recent PHD research.
The panel will explore the value and complexities of sharing prisoner stories, particularly given growing public interest in the Criminal Justice Sector. The event is free, drinks and canapes will be provided. If you are interested in attending, please email list@prisonersadvice.org.uk
CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: a celebration of hope after 5 years
The Community Chaplaincy Norfolk team are very excited to invite you to celebrate 5 years of CCN with them on [9 November, 17:00 – 21:00, St Stephens Church, Rampant Horse Street, Norwich, NR2 1QP, free].
