CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: independent inquiry into Andrew Malkinson’s case
Lord Chancellor Alex Chalk and Attorney General Victoria Prentis have ordered an independent inquiry into the circumstances and handling of Andrew Malkinson’s case after his conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal last month.
The inquiry will investigate the handling and the role of Greater Manchester Police, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Criminal Cases Review Commission in his conviction and subsequent appeals to ensure lessons are learned from the significant miscarriage of justice he has suffered. FUNDING: innovative housing-based solutions
Commonweal Housing is offering funding to frontline organisations across the UK to test new and innovative housing-based solutions to address injustices within the criminal justice system.
Through our Call for New Ideas partnership programme, we're inviting not-for-profit organisations to apply for funding between £5,000-10,000 to conduct a short-term feasibility study to evaluate a housing and support model tackling issues facing vulnerable individuals who have come into contact with the criminal justice system.
The feasibility study will determine if there is scope for the proposed model to operate as a property-based pilot project, which Commonweal would look to support by providing bespoke property for successful applicants to run their pilot over several years. CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: moving away from police responding to mental health crises
Sign up to the second of the Centre for Justice Innovation's 'Expert Voices' event series discussing key issues affecting the justice system [8 September, 13:00 – 14:00, online, free].
This event will provide a 40-minute introduction to the topic of moving away from police responding to mental health crises and will include two speakers - Tracy Bradley, Chief Superintendent at Humberside and Right Care, Right Person Lead, and Ebony Morgan, Program Director of Mobile Crisis Intervention, Los Angeles, who will discuss two alternate models in the UK and US. The first is ‘Right Care, Right Person’ a model that started in Humberside and is due to be rolled out nationally across England, and the other ‘Mobile Crisis Intervention’ a model that’s been established across many states in America. There will be time for Q&A. Register here or contact Miranda at mparis@justiceinnovation.org
RESOURCE: Pushing the Boundaries: struggling to comply in a women's prison
At the age of 54, Sue Wheatcroft was arrested for attempted murder. Although never charged, the fallout from the experience, along with poor mental health, led her to spending over a year in prison.
In this book, ‘Pushing the Boundaries: struggling to comply in a women's prison’ Sue describes the circumstances surrounding the arrest, but mostly she talks about her experiences in prison. She presents an incredibly candid account of how her personality changed from being placid and somewhat introverted, to someone who was confrontational, belligerent, and extroverted.
