OPPORTUNITY: Support to compete for government contracts
The UK Government spends approximately £290 billion a year on goods and services. Charities and social enterprises in England – otherwise known as voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSEs) – are natural partners for government as they share a commitment to improving the lives of people and places.
This fully funded programme aims to support VCSE suppliers in England to work with government clients who can really help increase their impact. It also aims to help public sector commissioners to work with innovative organisations that share their values.
Delivered by the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE), Social Enterprise UK (SEUK) and Voice4Change England, this programme is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Find out more here
RESOURCE: Why Housing First should interest the criminal justice sector
Housing First is a highly successful intervention for people experiencing complex needs. It gives them a home and the open-ended wrap-around support they need to keep it. While typically seen as a homelessness solution, it has huge benefits in other sectors including criminal justice. By getting involved with a local Housing First service, commissioners and professionals within the criminal justice system can help reduce re-offending among specific populations and in turn reduce the call on a range of resources and finances.
To support criminal justice sector involvement in Housing First, Homeless Link, the membership body for frontline homelessness services, has produced an essential introductory guide
RESOURCE: a new Birth Charter for women
The charity Birth Companions has launched its new Birth Charter for women with involvement from children’s social care to help bring greater attention to the needs of women who are almost entirely overlooked in national policy and guidance in the health, social care and family justice systems.
The Birth Charter sets out how services and systems in England should support all women involved with children’s social care from conception to their child’s second birthday. Fourteen principles are outlined to inform and shape policy, commissioning, and professional practice, and to support advocacy. Off the back of the Charter, Birth Companions is calling for a national health and social care pathway for pregnant women and mothers of infants who are subject to pre-birth or parenting assessment, or child protection proceedings.
