Clinks events and training
April 2023
Clinks runs events and training for voluntary organisations working in the criminal justice system. We hear time and time again that organisations feel stronger alongside others and enjoy being part of a well-connected network.
We have hosted over 70 events this year (2022/2023), with around 1,800 delegates in total, creating space for the voluntary sector working in criminal justice system to connect, develop, influence and stay up to date with the latest developments in the sector.
As we plan our programme for the year ahead, if you have any ideas of events and training that would benefit you/your organisation, please do contact us on events@clinks.org.
Come along to one of our upcoming events to stay connected, learn something new and work together for a better criminal justice system.
Pragmatism and progress:
Using values to build the case for bridges from prison
10:00, 4 April | online | free
The vast majority of people who serve time in prison will leave at some point. And, when they do, most will need support to enable them to continue with their lives and contribute to society. Evidence shows job opportunities and supportive relationships, such as family, are two of the most significant things that will help.
But how can we help more people to see that? How can we build support for action and investment in these areas?
These are the questions at the heart of FrameWorks’ latest communications research into the criminal justice system.
In this session, we will take a closer look at two of the principles featured in the communications toolkit “Bridges from prison”, and how you can apply them to your organisation’s communications. Book your place here.
Doing our stories justice:
Framing stories of lived experience
10:00, 11 April | online | free
Stories are powerful, and stories from lived experience can be particularly effective in shining a light on why things need to change.
But how can we make sure stories are being heard and understood? How can we make sure our stories aren’t just resonating with our audiences, but are also helping to change hearts and minds?
In this interactive workshop, we will explore how framing can play a part in how we tell stories of lived experience – whether you want to learn more about framing your own story, or you want to better support other people to tell theirs.
We will look at ideas such as the role of context and telling a wider systemic story, and practical tips which can be applied in a range of communications and situations to make sure we are doing our stories justice.
The session will draw insights from FrameWorks UK’s latest work focused on criminal justice, and from their research in other areas such as poverty and homelessness. Book your place here.
All Wales criminal justice forum
10:00, 20 April | online | free
Our All Wales criminal justice forums bring together partners working across Wales in the criminal justice system. The forums will be held quarterly, providing an opportunity for people working in the criminal justice system to find out about latest government policy developments impacting organisations working in Wales.
These events also provide the space to network with other organisations, discuss opportunities for joint working and offer each other peer support. They are also an opportunity for Clinks’ members and partners to showcase their work.
The All Wales criminal justice forum is open to all organisations working in the criminal justice system in Wales. Book your place here.
No place for old men: what the evidence tells us
14:00, 20 April | online | free
Louise Ridley, senior lecturer in Criminology at Northumbria University, will discuss the latest evidence around the key issues and challenges of our ageing prison population.
This is part of our “A matter of fact: what the evidence tells us” series, to accompany our Evidence Library, giving you the chance to ask your own questions of leading academics talking about the latest research on an important criminal justice topic.
There will also be a chance to ask Louise questions in a Q&A session. Book your place here.

Clinks continues to advocate for improved commissioning practices; to share learning amongst the sector and provide opportunities for connection; and to provide a strong platform from which the sector can come together to speak out on the issues that matter to organisations and the people they work with.
Our annual State of the sector research enables us to understand what organisations are experiencing and how developments in the criminal justice landscape and wider external environment are impacting them and their service users.
