Dear colleague,
We are pleased to announce the launch of our State of the sector 2022 report.
State of the sector 2022 explores the landscape of the criminal justice voluntary sector as it emerged from the pandemic into an increasingly challenging operational environment.
As Clinks’ role is to represent, support and advocate for the voluntary sector working in the criminal justice system our annual State of the sector research is produced, in partnership with the NCVO, as a free resource evidencing what our members and sector are experiencing and the impact on their service users.
Below is a summary of the key findings from the State of the sector 2022 report most applicable to you:
Short-term & long-term financial sustainability/funding
- There remains a lack of grant clarity for services specifically supporting those who are racially minoritised.
- 60% of organisations with an income below £100,000 are unconfident about their financial sustainability over the next two years. Organisations supporting those from racially minoritised backgrounds raised their concerns around capacity building and a lack of available grants/specific contracts so struggle with generating income.
Increased demand for services
- Increase in respondents from racially minoritised backgrounds - there are increasing numbers of Black men in particular, coming into contact with the criminal justice system with this being reflected with the rise in number of people accessing services.
- The sector is adapting to increased demand with flexibility in the services provided, working both in person and remotely allows organisations to better reach the people they support.
Staffing/volunteer issues
- Staff recruitment remains an issue for organisations and with funding remaining a problem - it continues to be a challenge to recruit.
Involving people with lived experience
- The challenges faced by those from minority ethnic backgrounds is not always understood by those that do not have the lived experienced. The depth of such issues can be minimised and those with lived experience are able to fill the gaps.
Clinks’ Race & Justice network
Organisations within the Race and Justice network support those from racially minoritised backgrounds in the criminal justice system. The network allows for organisations to work collaboratively to overcome challenges and provide Clinks with intelligence that we can highlight in the sector. Clinks recognises the complex issues faced by those from racially minoritised backgrounds and the continuous failures the system makes.
Our pledge to you
The sector’s voice is one of its key strengths, and Clinks will continue working to make sure it is heard. Over the coming year, Clinks will continue to advocate for improved commissioning practices; to share learning amongst the sector and provide opportunities for connection; and to provide a strong platform from which the sector can come together to speak out on the issues that matter to organisations and the people they work with.
