Come along to one of our upcoming events to stay connected, learn something new and work together for a better criminal justice system.
Stronger Voice: Using the legal system to achieve change
10am, 03 November | online | free
Every campaigner engages with the law when fighting for social change, but the legal environment is often perceived as specialist, technical, exclusionary and intimidating. This interactive Stronger Voice training session will help develop confidence in engaging with the law and increase understanding of ways in which the law can be used innovatively. Furthermore, the training will provide guidance on how to construct the framework for you to consider including the law in your campaign. This training will be led by barrister and attorney, Shauneen Lambe, who uses the law as a tool for social justice and whose strategic litigation work has regularly changed the law. This training is delivered in partnership with The Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK). SMK aims to support new and inexperienced campaigners, and to champion the right to campaign, offering experience and resources to bring the campaign community together. They support individuals, groups and communities to have the skills and confidence to speak up and take effective action on issues that matter to them. Book your place here
Navigating the criminal justice system workshop
10am, 10 November | online | from £50
Are you new to working or volunteering in the criminal justice system? Do you have volunteers or staff members who want to increase their understanding of the criminal justice system? The criminal justice system as a whole can be quite daunting to understand because of both its size and complexity. Join us at this three-hour workshop for voluntary sector staff and volunteers in which we aim to increase awareness of how the criminal justice system is organised, the complexities within it, and how it works. The workshop will explore the different elements of, and the various structures within, the criminal justice system, including government departments, regional and local statutory agencies, and the role of the voluntary sector, the services it provides and its work in supporting people. You will have the opportunity explore and discuss the multi-faceted nature of our criminal justice system. Book your place here
Stronger Voice: Influencing select committees
10:30am, 15 November | online | free
Join us for this interactive Stronger Voice training session to learn more about how influencing parliamentary select committees can play a part in achieving your campaign aims. This session is aimed at anyone working towards social change. Attendees will come away with:
- Knowledge of the different ways committees can help achieve policy change
- Practical ways to build relationships with committees and increase your impact
- The opportunity to put these ideas into practice and explore with peers how you might adapt them to your own work.
The training will be delivered by Ayaz Manji, a campaigner and policy professional with eight years of experience working in social change, including for Stonewall, Mind, and the Women and Equalities Select Committee. He has delivered campaigning and influencing programmes for audiences including young campaigners, welfare rights advisers, research professionals, and LGBT rights activists in Eastern Europe. Ayaz’s work is based on the belief that change happens when organisations think deeply about the fundamental causes of the problems they are trying to solve; share their power with the people who have direct experience of those problems, and build bridges between people who come from very different starting points. NCJAA Writing development workshops: writing case studies
10am, 24 November | online | free
This year the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) will be working in partnership with the Royal Literary Fund to deliver free writing development training for individuals and organisations delivering arts-based services and projects in the criminal justice system. A case study tells the story of a person, group or event. It is a structured approach to exploring ideas, explaining situations, demonstrating learning, reporting progress or celebrating your organisation’s success and the benefits for individuals, communities and other stakeholders. Case studies can also be useful for marketing and research.
This online training programme will help you to consider the following:
- Issues of structure
- Key elements of a case study (introduction, context, needs, description of intervention(s), outcomes and benefits)
- Tone and style for different audiences (funders, other stakeholders and organisations, individuals, families and broader community)
- Self-editing and proofreading.
