CLINKS NEWS: join Clinks' member advisory forum
Clinks is seeking voluntary sector professionals working in the criminal justice system to join our member advisory forum. This is an exciting opportunity where you will be able to provide Clinks with strategic and operational advice, to ensure that Clinks is best informed by the organisations that it supports. We are looking to recruit additional members of the forum to ensure that it represents the range and diversity of the voluntary sector. We are particularly looking for people with specialist knowledge and experience in working with women and those who use the arts and cultural activities to support those who have had contact with the criminal justice system. Find out more and apply by 19 November
CLINKS NEWS: consultation on services for young people and families
The Commission on Young Lives have opened a call for evidence into services for young people and families. They want to hear from those on the frontline; service and system leaders and commissioners; and those with lived experience. Your contribution will help the Commission on Young Lives to identify trends, build new practice models and gather ideas for practice and policy solutions. They have set out a series of consultation questions on how young people can be supported, including questions relevant to criminal justice. The closing date for submissions is [30 November]. Learn more and contribute here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Forward Trust launch the new prison apprenticeship pathway
Forward Trust have launched a new pilot project called the Prison Apprentice Pathway (or PAP) which is supported and funded by charitable trust Porticus UK. The project provides a unique pathway to apprenticeships for people who are currently in prison – a pathway that does not currently exist. It works by identifying people who are within three months of release and might be suitable for an apprenticeship when they get out. The pathway involves a series of short sessions which not only provide information about apprenticeships to participants (many may have never heard of them), but help dispel myths people might have about what apprenticeships involve or who can benefit from them. Read more about the pilot project here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: evaluation of police-led diversion (PDD) schemes
The College of Police and the University of Kent are leading an evaluation of police-led diversion (PDD) schemes that are already operating in [Durham, Thames Valley and West Midlands]. People on the schemes are assessed, then referred to education, treatment or support (as needed) with an ‘out of court disposal’, like a warning, which does not create a criminal record. Partners in the project include universities, police forces, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, and the charity User Voice. It is funded by the Cabinet Office’s Evaluation Accelerator Fund. For further information on the evaluation, please contact Nadine Hendrie at the University of Kent Nadine.hendrie@kent.ac.uk
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Clink Restaurant in Cardiff to shut its doors
The Clink Restaurant, part of The Clink Charity, is to close its doors after more than ten years of providing fine dining in the capital of Wales. The Clink Charity will continue to maintain its presence in Wales through supporting graduates of the Clink Restaurant into employment and through its Clink Kitchen scheme which trains prisoners in prison kitchens to become qualified to work in hospitality after release. Yvonne Thomas, the Chief Executive of The Clink Charity said: “It’s a sad day for us – Wales is such an important part of The Clink. Over the last 10 years, we have trained more than 400 serving prisoners and people on probation, helped them to get and keep jobs, and to stop people offending.”
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: anti-racism action plan launched in Wales
Criminal Justice in Wales has launched its new anti-racism action plan, outlining the determination of partners to do all they can, individually and collectively to root out any form of racism across the criminal justice system. The Criminal Justice Board for Wales agreed that a key priority for its commitment to race equality would be to advance, develop and implement a dedicated and transparent anti-racism action plan for the criminal justice system in Wales. From the outset, Criminal Justice in Wales committed to listening, hearing and incorporating the experiences and voices of those from racially minoritised communities to guide the development of the document and Clinks played an integral role in facilitating that community feedback. For more information, please contact our Senior Development Officer, Wales, Bryn Hall bryn.hall@clinks.org
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: launch of HMPPS probation grant funding
HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) are due to launch probation grants competitions on [21 September] to enable organisations to apply for grant funding to support work with racially minoritised people on probation. The competitions will be broken down by probation regions, with most regions expected to publish their draft ‘Specification of Requirements’ on the Ministry of Justice’s grants portal by today [9th September]. If you are not yet registered on the grants portal, find out more on the Clinks website here. The next Clinks race and justice network meeting on [14 September] will include speakers from HMPPS to talk in more detail about the grants competition. Register here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: event to understand the HMPPS probation grant funding competitions
On [12 September] HMPPS will be holding a virtual market engagement event ahead of the planned launch of the grants competitions on [21 September] (mentioned above). This session will focus on the first grant opportunities on the probation grants portal – grants to support work with racially minoritised people. Overviews will be given from the Insights and Commercial teams in HMPPS, including a walk-through of the general application process. Probation service regions will also detail their regional requirements, including priority locations and groups. If you would like to attend this event, please register your interest by clicking here. East of England and London probation regions held market engagement events this week, however the same information will be shared about the general competition process at the event on 12 September. South Central are holding separate in-person market engagement events next week and these have been shared through the grants portal.
SUPPORTING WOMEN IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: grant funding competitions to be launched soon
Further to the announcement last week of new funding to support women in or at risk of contact with the criminal justice system the Ministry of Justice will be launching three grant funding competitions. Women’s community sector organisations can apply to two of these. The first is to cover ‘core costs’ [from £60,000 to £150,00 per year] over three financial years and, the second is for funding to extend their services or offer new ones. The aim will be to fill gaps not currently met through the existing commissioned rehabilitative services. If you plan to apply and are not yet registered on the grants portal, find out more on the Clinks website here. The third competition will be open to statutory organisations with the aim of improving outcomes for women through implementing a Whole System Approach. Women’s community organisations should engage with their local partners, including Police and Crime Commissioners, local authorities, police forces and local criminal justice boards, to encourage them to bid for seed funding to improve the integration of women’s services in local areas to address women’s complex needs. Details of how to apply for funding will be shared when the competitions launch.
FUNDING: tender opportunity for research project in Birmingham
Birmingham City Council's Public Health team are seeking to commission an organisation to deliver a sex workers' health needs analysis in Birmingham. The supplier will be required to synthesise local data, gather insight from frontline services and people with lived experience and conduct a review of evidence on best practices/effective interventions and conduct rapid ethnography research. This in-depth analysis will provide a profile of sex worker populations and a description of health and wellbeing needs. It will identify opportunities to prevent ill health; reduce demand and need for services; identify good practice, barriers and enablers to access, gaps in services, and cost-effective options to meet needs. The six month contract will have an estimated start date of [22 October]. The closing date for submissions is [12 noon, 19 September]. Follow this link to access the opportunity
CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: celebrate 10 years of making music

CLINKS MEMBER’S TRAINING: discussing the social model of disability
One Small Thing charity will host Alex Osborne, Disability and Equality Officer, Disability Wales as they unpack the social model of disability (i.e. that the exclusion people face is caused by the way society is run and organised) [06 October, 1:30-4:30pm, Cardiff and Vale College]. Participants will have an opportunity to think together about the small changes they could make within their organisations to make them more accessible. The event will look at communication that is accessible and acknowledges the diversity of disabled people and what physical barriers might exist within organisations and possible solutions. All are welcome to join and hear about a practical approach for organisations to become more inclusive to disabled people as part of a trauma informed approach. Register to attend here
