CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: what is diversion? A video for young people
The Centre for Justice Innovation (CJI) has created a video which explains to young people what diversion is. While the offer of youth diversion is an effective alternative to receiving an out of court disposal, or going to court, it can be a confusing and overwhelming experience for children and their family. This short video has been created with children in mind, and details what diversion is, the benefits it offers and what the process involves. The CJI collaborated with Reality Art to create the video. Reality Art are a collective who specialise in capturing the voices of young people who have experienced the criminal justice system through art. View the video here

HMPPS would like to invite you to provide feedback on this draft framework by completing the questions in the following link. The framework will be published in the autumn and the consultation is open from [18 July to 12 August]. Find out more here

PUBLICATION: understanding and improving defendant engagement
Revolving Doors has recently published research, commissioned by HM Courts and Tribunals Service, that identifies the factors preventing defendants from engaging in criminal courts processes. Revolving Doors interviewed 38 defendants with recent criminal cases and explored how they can better be supported in various stages of courts processes, especially around legal representation, from their own perspective. The report details how the lack of user-friendly and timely information or support with signposting create additional barriers for defendants, and how early intervention is key to foster engagement. Read the report here
PUBLICATION: supporting people with unmet health and social needs
Revolving Doors have published research, commissioned by Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which identifies factors of success and room for improvement with the Greater Manchester Integrated L&D Service, which supports people with unmet health and social needs involved with the criminal justice system. It offers considerable insight from staff and people using the service – with the need for trusting relationships and person-centred approaches being, for instance, unanimously shared. The research includes many more findings and recommendations that can be relevant to other organisations supporting people with multiple needs, criminal justice involvement or difficulty engaging with traditional services.
