CLINKS NEWS: State of the sector survey 2022
The 2022 State of the sector survey closing date has been extended to Monday 1 August. This is your chance to tell us about the challenges your organisation has faced over the last year and help us influence key decision makers on your behalf and ensure that our support meets your needs. The survey asks about your organisation’s criminal justice work including the clients you support, commissioning and referrals, staffing, and volunteers. Please have numbers ready from the 2021-2022 financial year. The survey takes around 20-25 minutes to complete. Respond before [ Monday 1 August]. Do not miss your chance to be heard. CLINKS NEWS: what does the launch of grants for probation services mean for the voluntary sector?
On 22 July a new probation grants portal was launched to enable HMPPS to award grants across probation regions. We have published a blog which summarises the key things voluntary organisations need to know to access the portal and apply for grants. Read the blog here
CLINKS NEWS: Policy Officer vacancy
We have an exciting opportunity for a new Policy Officer to join us at Clinks. Responsibilities include identifying new government initiatives and policy relating to criminal justice and the voluntary sector in England and Wales, conducting desk-based research, supporting the development and operation of the policy focussed groups, networks and structures which Clinks facilitates and producing documents and briefings as part of a team. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Community Awards 2022 extension
The Howard League for Penal Reform have extended the deadline for the Community Awards 2022 to [9 August]. Andrea Coomber, Chief Executive, has written this blog about the extension.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM NEWS: Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) inquiry into the Bill of Rights Bill
The JCHR has launched an inquiry on the Bill of Rights Bill, including a call for written evidence. Areas on which the Committee want to receive evidence include: the proposals requiring courts to give the “greatest possible weight” to the importance of reducing the risk to the public of people given custodial sentences, when considering certain human rights of people in prison; taking the conduct of the claimant into account when considering damages; and the introduction of a permissions stage for human rights claims, amongst others. Alongside the call for evidence, the Committee is also running an online survey to hear a wider range of views on the Bill. The deadline for submissions is [26 August]. CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: Probation, mental health and criminal justice
Join Revolving Doors to celebrate the launch of a new book that explores issues in mental health and probation across the globe [12pm to 1pm, 3 August, online, free]. The event brings together the perspectives of practitioners, researchers and people with lived experience and a Q&A with the book's authors, including: Dr. Coral Sirdifield and Professor Charlie Brooker (providing research perspectives); Dr. Kelly Ellis Devitt (staff perspective); Dr. Laura Buckley (Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Probation); Philip Mullen and Emma (providing a lived experience perspective). Each author will give a short presentation on their chapter as part of this event before a Q&A with the panel. The event will take place on Microsoft Teams and a link will be shared with you a week before the event. Register here
CLINKS MEMBER’S TRAINING: Care leaver awareness training
This three-hour course, delivered by Nepacs, will be of interest to those working with young people in both a community and custodial setting. The course explores what it means to be a care leaver and the potential issues faced by care experienced people. The course also gives awareness on the rights and entitlements of legal care leavers aged 18 to 25 years. Learning outcomes: identify Care Experienced people based on legal definitions; understand the issues faced by Care Experienced people; describe the basic rights of Care Experienced people and know where to find local offers; confidently work with Care Experienced people. CLINKS MEMBER’S TRAINING: parental rights in prison training
This is a two and a half hour awareness session, delivered by Nepacs, for those who may work with a family where a parent is in custody or is at risk of going to custody. It looks at the legalities of parental rights and the challenges and barriers people in prison face in exercising their parental rights and remaining an active parent. Learning outcomes: understand the impact of imprisonment on parents and their children; understand the impact of imprisonment on people in prison's parental rights; understand the support needs of people in prison to exercise their parental rights; understand the needs and wishes of people in prison in managing their parental rights. CLINKS MEMBER’S TRAINING: get to grips with Universal Credit
This online training, [10am-3:30pm, 8 August, online, £59,50] provided by Society Matters CIC, has been described as the most comprehensive Universal Credit course available. This introduction to welfare benefits training by Society Matters CIC is CPD accredited (3.5 CPD points). CLINKS MEMBER’S TRAINING: get to grips with Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
The get to grips with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) course by Society Matters CIC is CPD accredited (5 CPD points) [10am-3:30pm, 31 August, online, £59,50]. This PIP training course is designed to help welfare professionals understand Personal Independence Payments, the key drivers for PIP assessments, and be capable of helping clients to navigate the application process to give them the highest possible chance of getting their full benefit entitlement the first time round. OPPORTUNITY: research participation with King's College London
Researchers at the National Addiction Centre, King's College London, are undertaking a six-month pilot study to explore the use of smartphone apps as a tool to support prison leavers at risk of drug overdose. The Navigator Study will assess the acceptability of apps to aid addiction recovery, prevent drug overdose, and support prison leavers' transition from prison to the community by gathering preliminary qualitative evidence and establishing a stakeholder group. We welcome recent prison leavers who have experienced drug addiction, professionals who work with these clients, and relevant policymakers. King’s College offers funds to support research participation and will establish a future programme of research based on the pilot study findings.
