CLINKS NEWS: State of the sector survey 2022
The 2022 State of the sector survey closing date has been extended to 1 August. This is your chance to tell us about the challenges your organisation has faced over the last year and help us influence key decision makers on your behalf and ensure that our support meets your needs. The survey asks about your organisation’s criminal justice work including the clients you support, commissioning and referrals, staffing, and volunteers. Please have numbers ready from the 2021-2022 financial year. The survey takes around 20-25 minutes to complete. Respond before [1 August]. Do not miss your chance to be heard. CLINKS NEWS: Ministry of Justice launch probation grants portal
Clinks are pleased to announce that the Ministry of Justice is launching their probation grants portal. This follows independent reports by both Richard Oldfield and Clinks, where we recommended the use of grants to fund voluntary organisations to deliver rehabilitative services. In April 2022 HMPPS published a draft process for awarding grants and invited feedback. Clinks responsed to the draft proposal, providing feedback from voluntary sector organisations and feedback from Clinks based on knowledge drawn from ongoing engagement with the voluntary sector about their experience of commissioning.
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Mindfulness resource for people in prison
Prisons can be a stressful environment, affecting not only mental health but physical health too. Recoop has developed a Mindfulness Booklet providing simple techniques to help combat stress, as well as a weekly journal. Mindfulness not only helps with stress levels, it has also been shown to help with improving mental and physical wellbeing. Recoop have seen the evidence for themselves, with one of their service users stating that “this training pack would definitely help more people I know in prison. Not just while they are in custody, but also when they are close to release”. For more information, please visit the Recoop web page here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Probation grants application portal
The probation grants portal is scheduled to go live today, [12pm, 22 July] with the first grant applications for people on probation from ethnic minority groups anticipated to launch towards the end of August. The Ministry of Justice has published two documents, frequently asked questions (FAQs) as well as a step-by-step guidance for registering. You can also register for the step-by-step walkthrough session here [1pm, 25 July, online].
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: extended community mentoring in the South West
The Probation Service plans to run a call-off competition via the Dynamic Framework to source a provider(s) do deliver extended community mentoring in the [South West, Lot 1: Plymouth, Devon and Torbay & Lot 2: Dorset]. The tender is expected go live on [29 July (subject to change)] and will enable probation practitioners to refer people on probation to receive additional support where it is needed to assist with their re-integration, improve engagement and contribute to a reduction in re-offending. To be eligible, suppliers will need to qualify on DF.07 Wellbeing and DF.08 Social Inclusion, either in their own right or through a subcontracted bidding model if only qualified in one of the categories. To discuss this opportunity further, please get in touch at ProbationDynamicFramework@justice.gov.uk
PUBLICATION: fears of a perfect storm in prisons
The prison service is facing an exodus of staff ahead of a projected increase in the prison population of nearly 25% in the next four years, according to a new report published by the Prison Reform Trust. The latest edition of Prison: the facts reveals that more than one in seven (15%) prison officers left the service last year. Of those, half had been in the role for less than three years; and more than a quarter left within the first year. These latest figures have sparked fears that the service faces significant competing challenges on the horizon—with too few staff and too many people in prison—which are already hampering efforts to provide safe and purposeful prisons following the disruption of the pandemic.
