PUBLICATION: crises and crossroads for the children’s secure estate
The Alliance for Youth Justice has published the third of three policy briefings for their ‘Impact of Covid-19 on Youth Justice’ research project. The briefing presents the significant challenges for the children’s secure estate that lie ahead in the wake of the pandemic. It examines existing failures pre-pandemic, the significant risk of harm to children in custody as a result of experiences during the pandemic, failures in strategy for the children’s secure estate, and the government projection that the number of children in custody will steeply rise in coming years. The briefing finds that; the pandemic response raises questions about leadership, oversight and structure of the estate, and calls for urgent action to repair the harms of the pandemic for children in custody. Read the briefing here
OPPORTUNITY: prison leaver employment
The Centre for Social Justice’s (CSJ) Criminal Justice Unit is launching a call for evidence to understand how employment outcomes for prison leavers can be improved. Ministry of Justice data reveals that only 16% of prison leavers released between April 2021 and March 2022 were in employment six weeks after they left custody, while only 23% had a job six months after release. The CSJ is asking: what needs to change to ensure people leaving prison have the best chance of securing and retaining meaningful employment? They want to hear from stakeholders across the criminal justice sector, including, but not limited to, prison education providers and voluntary organisations. Crucially, they want to hear from those with lived experience of the criminal justice system. Find out more here
