CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Probation Quarterly has been published
The Probation Institute have published issue 24 of Probation Quarterly today. This issue includes articles from academics, practitioners and the voluntary sector covering the following subjects: working with trauma in probation; findings from Revolving Doors’ lived experience inquiry into probation; and an account of life as a probation officer in a rural setting. There are many more articles to enjoy. Download your free copy at the top of the Probation Quarterly website
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: launch of the Transform Justice podcast
Transform Justice have launched the first episode of their new podcast, which throws light on the hidden corners of the criminal justice system. Episode 1 looks at the single justice procedure (SJP) with guests Naima Sakande of APPEAL and Evening Standard courts reporter Tristan Kirk. The SJP is the way most crimes are prosecuted - but there is no court hearing, and many people have never even heard of it. Join hosts Penelope Gibbs and Rob Allen and guests, in discussing what the SJP is, why it is unfair and what could be done to make it better? Listen and subscribe here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: rising costs and your organisation
NCVO are engaging with the sector to understand a little more about the impact of rising costs. At an event earlier this week, many people expressed real concern, particularly about energy costs. NCVO are calling for responses to a short survey which closes on 24 June. It would be helpful if you could participate and share within your networks. Complete the survey here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: series of short films sharing voices of experience
Voices of Experience is a unique series of films launched by Jane Hutt AS / MS the Minister for Social Justice for Wales. The films created by Inside Out Support Wales include interviews with seven people, all former prisoners, explaining how they have rewritten their futures after leaving prison. Explained in their own terms, each person tells their story, giving their personal experiences, so that other prison leavers can benefit from their story. View the series on the Inside Out Support Wales YouTube channel here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prisons strategy white paper consultation response
The Ministry of Justice have published their response to the Prisons Strategy White Paper Consultation. The response confirms eight commitments to improve prison safety will be delivered over the next three years. Plans to legislate for ending Friday release from custody will be welcomed by the voluntary sector. Also welcome, is enhanced support and an innovations taskforce to tackle violence and self-harm in prison; plans for investment in drug treatment, the development of the new national regime model, and the presumption that people in prison will be offered employment in custody. Disappointingly, the response does not include specific proposals to tackle racial disparity in prisons. Read the published response in full here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: investigation into the London Probation Service
The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee has launched an investigation into the London Probation Service. They will consider how the London Probation Service is working in partnership with statutory agencies and voluntary sector organisations since reunification, to support people under probation supervision and reduce their risk of reoffending. They are keen to hear from probation practitioners, campaigners, voluntary sector organisations, London boroughs and anyone else with an interest in this topic. We also particularly welcome evidence from service users and those with lived experience of probation services in London. Closing date for responses is 18 July. Read more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: competition for unpaid work contract in North Wales
In March 2022 the Probation service issued a Request for Information (RFI) regarding a potential call-off competition for unpaid work services for North Wales. They now intend to launch this call-off competition on 24 June.
