CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: report on women in contact with the criminal justice system
The Public Accounts Committee has published its report, Improving outcomes for women in the criminal justice system. This notes the aims of the Female Offender Strategy are widely supported, but actual progress in delivering the strategy has been “disappointing”. The report also points out that the strategy’s emphasis on community provision is undermined by the limited investment in it: £9.5 million compared to the £200 million committed to creating 500 new women’s prison places. The Committee said successful implementation of the strategy relies on organisations, including the voluntary sector, working together to address the underlying causes of women’s offending. CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: a memoir of prison, family and philosophy
Join the Prisoner Learning Alliance (PLA) for a webinar [13 July, 14:30-15:30, online, free] with Andy West. Andy teaches philosophy in prisons. He has conversations with people inside about their lives and listens as the men and women explore new ways to think about their situation. Could we ever be good if we never felt shame? What makes a person worthy of forgiveness? Could someone in prison ever be more free than someone outside? Andy will read from his new book “The Life Inside: A Memoir of Prison, Family and Philosophy” which will be followed by a chaired conversation and questions from the audience. Click here to register
