Dear [current-user:display-name],
We've seen the massive financial impact the pandemic has had on the voluntary sector working in criminal justice during Covid-19. So in 2020 we were very pleased to obtain funding to help support the sector with a time-limited free membership offer.
We have seen like-minded organisations pulling together, supporting each other and continuing to support people in the criminal justice system and their families in prisons and communities throughout this critical time.
With this offer now shortly coming to an end on 31st March, we're announcing changes to our membership fees. In recognition of the continued financial pressure facing our sector, membership will continue to be extremely cost effective. In fact, around 50% of our members will continue to pay nothing at all.
What do I need to know?
- Your fee will continue to be proportionate to the size of your organisation. This eases the burden on smaller organisations.
- We're raising the income threshold so that organisations with under £250k annual income will pay nothing. This was previously £30k.
- If you're a specialist organisation (defined below) with under £500k annual income, you won't pay anything, reflecting our particular support and commitment to smaller and specialist organisations.
- To make it easier for you to plan your finances, your membership year will run April – March every year.

Specialist organisations
Our sector transforms the lives of people in the criminal justice system every day. Organisations work in varied and diverse ways to meet the specific needs of a variety of people. We know that some organisations work in ways that, unfortunately, mean they struggle to get funding. So some specialist organisations won't pay anything at all, these are:
Arts |
An organisation who specialises in delivering services using the arts in prison or community settings. |
Families |
An organisation whose main stated purpose is to provide services for families of people with experience of the criminal justice system |
Older people |
A voluntary organisation whose main stated purpose is to provide services for older people with experience of the criminal justice system. For this purpose, we're using the HMPPS definition of an older person which is one over 50 years of age |
People with lived experience in organisational leadership |
A voluntary organisation that either has a chief executive, 50% of the senior management team or 50% of the trustee board that identifies as having lived experience of the criminal justice system |
Racially-minoritised people |
A voluntary organisation that provides services designed specifically for, and open only to, racially-minoritised people, or a racially-minoritised people led voluntary organisation (in which at least 50% of the leadership roles are held by racially-minoritised people) |
Women |
A women-specific voluntary organisation that provides services designed specifically for, and open only to, women with experience of the criminal justice system |
When does this take effect?
These changes take effect from 1st April 2022. But even if our plan means that you're eligible to pay a small fee, you won’t be invoiced for this until your next renewal date and this will be a pro-rata amount up to 31st March 2023.
What happens next?
We'll write to you to confirm that the details we hold about you are correct, what we think your fee will be, and when you should expect your invoice. Please look out for our email in the next couple of weeks.
In the meantime, if you have any queries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me on membership@clinks.org.
Yours Sincerely,
Helen Carter
