CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: women in prison during Covid-19
The Prison Reform Trust has published a fourth briefing from the CAPPTIVE (Covid Action Prisoners Project: Tracking Innovation, Valuing Experience) initiative, focusing on the experience of women in prison during the pandemic. CAPPTIVE is a collaborative project by the Prison Reform Trust and its Prisoner Policy Network, which aims to describe life in prison under the pandemic. The briefing examines the effects of Covid-19 restrictions on women’s prisons and how this has severely impacted their mental well-being and ability to maintain family ties. It draws on evidence from 18 women in prison during the pandemic, and is supported by other findings from independent inspections. The briefing suggests what prisons should do as they move out of pandemic restrictions to restore a normal regime. Read it here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: stepping down as Chief Executive
Chris Moore is to step down from his role as Chief Executive of The Clink Charity after 11 years. The Clink Charity trains serving prisoners to gain their City and Guilds National Vocational Qualifications in hospitality and horticulture in a real-life working environment whilst serving their sentence, and supports them upon release into the community to gain full time employment and accommodation. Chris Moore said: "After 11 years with The Clink Charity I have decided that now is the ideal time for me to step down as Chief Executive and I believe that The Clink is in great shape financially and operationally after the pandemic, with an exciting period of growth ahead for my successor to take the charity onto the next stage.” Read more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Friday releases
Three years since launching its End Friday Releases campaign in 2018, Nacro staff continue to hear case after case of people being released on a Friday who are left without vital support over the weekend, leading to homelessness, lost contact with services, relapse into substance misuse and further offending. Nacro is therefore renewing its call to #EndFridayReleases for those people who are due to be released from prison on a Friday who have significant resettlement needs. Nacro’s updated briefing highlights the experiences of staff and the people that they work with. The briefing also draws together voices from different agencies who feel the impact of Friday prison releases – the police, local authority housing, probation and other voluntary sector organisations working in the area.
