Questions were raised around issues such as taking the vaccine during Ramadan, and how HMPPS plans to ensure people in prison feel connected to their families and wider community if social contact is not possible. Racism and perceptions of preferential treatment were also discussed. Read the full meeting notes here

CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities
Commenting on the report of the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities, published on 31st March, Peter Dawson, director of the Prison Reform Trust, said: “For all its claimed emphasis on following the evidence, this complacent report turns a blind eye to the grossly disproportionate outcomes for Black people both in prison and on their journey to it… Blithe optimism is no substitute for the clear eyed analysis and hard work needed to change a system that discriminates from beginning to end.” Read the full statement here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: racial disproportionality in youth diversion
The Centre for Justice Innovation has published a new research report, Equal diversion?, which explores racial disproportionality in existing evidence-led youth diversion schemes. While the evidence strongly suggests that youth diversion is beneficial for the children and young people who go through it, inequality in access to and engagement with youth diversion is likely to have a material impact on racial disparities later on in the system. The report also identifies a range of promising practices which, if implemented more broadly, give hope that all young people can be offered a chance to change their behaviour and realise their future potential. Read the report here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: needs assessment
HM Inspectorate of Probation has published its latest Academic Insight paper Needs assessment: risk, desistance and engagement. The paper focuses on the potential for improvements to assessment processes of people with convictions. It states that the assessment process itself can serve a purpose that goes beyond identifying the support an individual may require and what risks need to be considered - offering opportunities for co-production, the demonstration of care, and the starting point for building a relationship. Read the paper here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: health and wellbeing
The Food Matters Inside and Out project has launched a monthly health and wellbeing e-newsletter, aimed at women who face extra challenges in life, including poor mental health, substance misuse, early life trauma and experience of the criminal justice system.
