CLINKS EVENT: Sir Brian Leveson at our AGM
We’re delighted to announce that the Rt. Hon. Sir Brian Leveson will be our keynote speaker at our AGM [22nd October, online, free]. This event is a great opportunity to network with colleagues across the sector, meet with funders and policy makers. Find out more and book here
CLINKS PUBLICATION: Covid-19 recovery in prisons and probation
Clinks has published a summary of recent discussions held between the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3) special interest group on Covid-19 and officials from HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS). At the meetings, HMPPS officials set out how their plans to recover across prisons and probation services have progressed, and how the increasing transmission of Covid-19 in the community may impact further progress. Officials responded to operational questions from the group, including on the use of face masks and alcohol-based hand sanitiser in prisons, and how HMPPS intends to use technology to conduct remote supervision in the future. The RR3 is a formal advisory group to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and HMPPS, consisting of senior voluntary sector leaders. Read the meeting notes here
CLINKS BLOG: 55 organisations funded with Covid-19 response grants
The Covid-19 response grants fund has now drawn to a close, and we are thrilled to have awarded 58 grants to 55 organisations on behalf of the Ministry of Justice/Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (MoJ/HMPPS) to deliver important work supporting people in prison, through-the-gate, and in the community in the context of Covid-19. Having received more than 200 applications, the majority of applications were unfortunately unsuccessful, and we wish we could have funded more. We received applications for practical through-the-gate and community support, helplines in custody, arts, drama, singing, creative writing, reading groups, horticulture groups, parenting and family support, therapeutic counselling, and many, many more. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: safe, secure housing
Nine voluntary sector experts have come together to shed light on the impact of housing instability on those facing social injustice, in a new essay anthology from Commonweal Housing. Locked Out features authors from across the voluntary sector including Burcu Borysik from Revolving Doors, Jessica Southgate from Agenda and Nicola Drinkwater from Clinks, who share their perspectives on the housing challenges faced by the people they work with. The essays in the anthology explore the impacts of the housing crisis on survivors of violence against women and girls, those in contact with the criminal justice system, and people going through transitions in life. It launches alongside a podcast of the same name, in which contributors explore its topics in greater depth. Read the anthology here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: reducing re-offending with West Yorkshire PCC
West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Mark Burns-Williamson, commissioned User Voice to speak to people in prison and on probation and understand what more can be done to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. User Voice spoke to adults and those in youth offending teams to understand their views and experiences and produced a set of key recommendations. Addiction, mental health, housing and education were found to be crucial areas for further work and support. The findings of the report have been shared with partners across the criminal justice system to find joint solutions to the issues raised and improve services overall and, importantly, involve people who have been in prison or on probation. Read the report here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: reframing guide
Transform Justice has published a new step-by-step guide to help voluntary sector organisations reframe their language and communicate more effectively. The guide draws on extensive research from the Frameworks Institute into the public’s beliefs about why people commit crime and how to reduce it, and includes lots of tips, examples and advice. Read the full guide here
