Supporting arts in criminal justice through COVID-19
Clinks and the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance are working to support the voluntary sector and people delivering arts activity in the criminal justice system through COVID-19.
We know how importantly the sector treats its work and its duty of care to its staff, volunteers and beneficiaries. We know that the current situation will have a huge impact on those artists and arts organisations planning events, productions and activities across the criminal justice sector and beyond.
The criminal justice system
On Friday, Clinks published a blog from our Chief Executive Officer, Anne Fox, to share the latest guidance and information from Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) about the virus. Public Health England and the Ministry of Justice have since published further information for healthcare staff and custodial staff in addressing COVID-19 in prisons and other prescribed places of detention.
We are aware that the sector will have further questions about the effect on their operations or the information they should provide to service users. You should speak to your local sponsor or link person within the establishments or probation areas that you work in in the first instance. If you have concerns or have a specific question that you are struggling to have answered, together with HMPPS, Clinks has set up a dedicated mailbox for criminal justice organisations’ related questions at covid19@clinks.org. We will endeavour to answer as many of these as we can, together with HMPPS, and plan to develop some specific FAQs for the most commonly received.
Arts and culture
Arts Council England has announced that its regularly funded organisations will continue to receive funding and that funding conditions will not apply for at least three months. It is also planning to refocus grant programmes to help compensate individual artists and freelancers. It has published a COVID-19 information page, which it will be updating with its latest guidance as the situation develops.
The NCJAA is also in conversation with colleagues at the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance about how it can align efforts to support the sectors through the impact of COVID-19.
Funders
London Funders has coordinated a statement from its members and other funders (including those outside of London) that commits to a number of measures to support the changing needs of grantees.
