CLINKS TRAINING: arts in prisons
This one day introductory course [11th November, Manchester, from £75] will explore the process of delivering sustainable creative activities in prisons, from idea formation through to evaluation. It will also provide an overview of the current criminal justice system and an insight to working inside a prison, looking at practical considerations. The course will be delivered by Rebbecca Hemmings (Development Officer for the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance) and Sara Lee (Director of Music in Prisons). The course is aimed at those with an arts background, but with little or no previous experience of working in a criminal justice setting. Book your place here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE BLOG: good practice
In a guest blog for Arts Council England, Dora Dixon introduces the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance’s (NCJAA) good practice guide. The guide is a practical resource for anyone delivering creative activity in criminal justice settings – from local artists to national museums, and particularly those unsure where to begin. The guide makes a convincing case for why the arts and culture sector should be extending its unique services to the prison population. It describes NCJAA’s vision for arts to be embedded right across the criminal justice system, unlocking pathways that allow everyone to prosper in a thriving creative economy. Read the blog here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: fair chance for students with convictions
Ten UK universities have signed the ‘Fair Chance for Students with Convictions’ pledge, following a project led by Unlock. The project is designed to support fair admissions and improve access and participation for universities. Its three main objectives are: putting policies in place at each university; a toolkit for other universities to use and a pledge for universities to sign up to. To ensure applicants are aware of the commitment, signatories will be asked to include a link to the pledge in their admissions policy. Read more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: how old are our prisons?
Following the government announcement that it has abandoned plans to close "the most dilapidated" Victorian prisons, Russell Webster examines the age of the prison estate in England and Wales in his latest blog. It includes an interactive chart of all 120 prisons in England and Wales arranged along a timeline of when they first became custodial institutions. Read it here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: pop-up shop
Fine Cell Work has opened a new pop-up shop in Peter Jones and Partners in Sloane Square. The pop-up shop is only open until 31st October and sells cushions, decorations and more, all handmade by people in prison. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: stop and search
The Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA) and EQUAL have responded to the Home Office’s Equality Impact Assessments (EIA) for the changes to Section 60 (s.60) suspicion-less searches. Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 allows a police officer to stop and search a person without suspicion, in an area authorised by a senior police officer. These changes, which lower both the threshold and seniority of rank required to authorise a s.60 order, were piloted initially in March 2019 in seven police forces before being rolled out nationally in August. Read the response here

FUNDING: arts
Organisations based in Wales or elsewhere in the European Union may be eligible to apply for a Small Grant of up to £10,000 from Arts Council of Wales. Applications can be made at any time and a decision will be made within six working weeks of submitting an application. There are more details about the eligibility criteria and how to make an application in the guidelines on the Arts Council of Wales website. If you’ve had a grant from Arts Council of Wales before, you can apply for a Large Grant, between £10,001 and £50,000. The next deadlines for Large Grant applications are on 6th November 2019 and 8th January 2020. Find out more here
FUNDING: women’s resources
There is £9,903 of resource funding remaining to be allocated for use by 31st March 2020 as part of the Female Offender Strategy. The Ministry of Justice is therefore seeking further expressions of interest for use of this final tranche of funding. In view of the small amount of money available, it is seeking proposals for direct expenditure, such as toys for a crèche; printing course materials; improving equipment/furnishings etc. All proposed expenditure must be classified as resource expenditure, not capital expenditure. For a bid to be considered, please email Jason.Nickeas@justice.gov.uk for an application form to be completed by 1st November. Any queries please contact: cjwst@justice.gov.uk
CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: supporting care leavers
Nepacs is hosting an event [7th November, Chester-le-Street, free] to showcase work supporting care leavers to have a positive resettlement in the community following a prison sentence in the North East. ‘Paving the way: care leavers in custody’ will showcase the learning from a project which Nepacs has developed in HMP Deerbolt and HMP and YOI Low Newton over the past year. The project has so far engaged with 139 young men or women in prison. These young people then coproduced a new group work programme, named ‘Paving the way’, to support other care leavers in custody to prepare for release by exploring their rights and entitlements, people skills, housing and lifestyles. The event will be followed by Nepacs’ AGM. Find out more here
