Book now for our Anne Peaker lecture

We are pleased to announce that our annual Anne Peaker lecture will this year feature a screening of the acclaimed documentary, Injustice - a film made by a former prisoner that looks at our current criminal justice system. The screening will be followed by a panel debate featuring the director and leading specialist arts organisations, with a focus on service user led stories and their representation in the arts. Apply to join our Steering Group
We have one spot available on our Steering Group for the year 2018 - 2019. The Steering Group meet a minimum of five times a year to represent the membership and set priorities for the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance. We are actively seeking applications from both black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates and those with a lived experience of the criminal justice system. If you are interested in applying to stand for election, please submit a statement of no more than 200 words, outlining your skills and interests in arts and criminal justice, to dora.dixon@clinks.org by 5pm on Friday 2nd March
Clinks need to hear from you
Clinks have launched their most recent state of the sector survey and this year they are particularly interested to hear from arts organisations working in criminal justice settings. Their state of the sector research gathers the evidence they need to support voluntary organisations and lobby on your behalf, so it is vital that as many of you respond to their survey as possible. The deadline for responses is Wednesday 14th March. Have your say here

Arts in Prisons

During October 2017 HMP Leicester hosted the first two week arts festival in a UK prison - Talent Unlocked. This session (2 - 3pm) provides an opportunity to hear about the challenges and the value of producing a festival from both inside and outside of the wall, and marks the ninth year Arts in Prisons has been programmed as part of the Cultural Exchanges Festival. Synergy Theatre Project presents Blackout
13th - 17th March | Oval House Theatre, London | £7 / £10
Blackout is a play about 'getting bullied, fighting back, trying to make a name for yourself, turning vicious, doing something stupid, losing everything, then finding your way again.' Directed by Esther Baker, Blackout will be performed by a company of professional and former prisoner actors and will be followed by a question and answer session with Synergy Theatre Project's creative team. Charities Act Workshop

From 1st August 2018, changes to the 'automatic disqualification' rules mean that there will be more restrictions on who can run a charity, particularly effecting trustees and certain senior managers, including those with criminal records. The European Outsider Art Association Conference 2018

Drama and employability skills course for prisoners
Throughout 2018
Imagine If Theatre Company are now taking bookings for their Bird on the Wing course, which uses applied theatre techniques alongside a desistance to crime framework to achieve high quality outcomes for prisoners. The course can be delivered in prisons all over the UK throughout 2018. More information here

Good Vibrations need new trustees
National charity Good Vibrations help people in challenging circumstances with complex needs, including those in criminal justice settings, to develop crucial life and work skills through communal music-making. They are on the look out for new trustees and are particularly keen to find applicants with significant professional experience in fundraising, grant-writing, relationship management and/or corporate giving. Job vacancy at the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance
The Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance are looking for a Director to develop the organisation over the next four years, from its launch as a new Arts Council England National Portfolio Sector Support Organisation to its establishment as an individual charity. The Prisoner Learning Alliance is expanding its membership for 2018 and beyond. Ten years of Intermission Youth Theatre
Intermission Youth Theatre are celebrating their ten year anniversary, marking a decade of supporting 16-25 year olds who are at risk of offending, offenders, or lacking in opportunities, by using Shakespeare's plays as inspiration and reimagining his works by interspersing the original language with street rhetoric; with remarkable results. They are supported by patrons Mark Rylance and Naomie Harris. Find out more about their work here
Learning from Denmark
Blueprint Magazine have published an in-depth review of Denmark's Storstrøm Prison, designed by CF Møller, that "demonstrates a refreshingly nurturing and rehabilitating approach to prison design." They explore the spaces and services available to inmates that focus on wellbeing - and look at Danish rules regarding arts provisions in public projects. Read the full article here

We have uploaded four new reports to the Arts Alliance Evidence Library, our award-winning online library housing the key research and evaluation documents on the impact of arts-based projects, programmes and interventions within the criminal justice system. HMP Nottingham action plan
Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service have responded to the issuing of the first Urgent Notification after the inspection of HMP Nottingham, after inspectors who visited the prison in January 2018 assessed safety as 'poor', the lowest grading. Their response lays out an action plan that includes an urgent safety audit, training for staff and the temporary suspension of young adults behind held at the facility. Read the action plan here
