August highlights
This month the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) piloted a sold-out Introduction to arts in prisons training day in partnership with The Irene Taylor Trust and Music in Prison's Sara Lee, which explored the role and impact of arts in prisons and gave a practical introduction to working in criminal justice settings - watch this space for further sessions in the future. Back in the office we have been busy preparing upcoming publications and policy responses, welcoming our new Development Officer, Rebbecca Hemmings (don't miss her blog below), and enjoying reading applications to our professional mentoring scheme before the 5th September deadline. Anne Peaker lecture: How can art create a less violent society?

As part of the Monument Trust Fellowship, our annual Anne Peaker debate this year asks: How can art create a less violent society? In what ways does art contribute to violence in society? In what ways does it prevent it? Does art in the criminal justice system contribute to creating a less violent society, or can it do it harm? The event will be chaired by Alison Frater with an exclusive performance of Synergy Theatre Project's new play Blackout and a panel debate featuring Chairman Kato, artist and activist; Keith Palmer, director of The Comedy School; and Craig Pinkey, urban youth specialist and lecturer at University College Birmingham. New blog: Shakespeare leading the way in tackling youth crime
In our latest blog you can find out what NCJAA's new Development Officer, Rebbecca Hemmings, has been up to in her first few weeks. Reflecting on reintegration theories and Intermission Youth Theatre's work using Shakespeare to explore challenges and issues faced by young people, Rebbecca highlights the importance of her role in connecting with our membership and developing networks, both new and old. Alternative routes into theatre and the screen

I'm Still Here

I'm Still Here is the 11th exhibition produced by Koestler Trust in partnership with Southbank Centre. It follows the success of last year's exhibition Inside, which was curated by Antony Gormley. This year, the diverse range of art, writing and music by prisoners, ex-prisoners, detainees and secure patients has been selected by the families of prisoners inside, giving a unique and personal edge to the show that explores what it is like to have a loved one in prison. 30 years of Geese Theatre Company

Since 1987, Geese Theatre Company has presented interactive performances and facilitated drama-based groupwork and training events in secure and community settings. Free theatre training for women
Clean Break is recruiting members for the 2018 / 19 season of their free specialist theatre programme. The programme is open to women with lived experience of the criminal justice system or at risk of offending, and offers a foundation of learning and skills in theatre performance, creativity and wellbeing; with many former members now studying and working in the sector. Launch of Prisoner Policy Network
The Prisoner Policy Network is a free to join network of prisoners, ex-prisoners and supporting organisations. Hosted by the Prison Reform Trust, it will make sure prisoners' experiences are part of prison policy development nationally. It will support prisoners to share their expertise on key issues and questions, and is currently looking for contributions on the first question: What incentives work in prison? Find out more
Voices from the Row exhibition now online
During July 2018, Voices from the Row, an exhibition of poetry and artwork by prisoners incarcerated on death row San Quentin, was held at the Poetry Cafe in Holborn, London. The art, poetry and recordings that were on show are now available online as a virtual exhibition. Find out more
Cyrano behind bars
Last month the work of American prison arts organisation, Rehabilitation Through the Arts, was the focus of a New York Times editorial. Jesse Wegman explores their latest project - a production of 19th-century comedy, Cyrano de Bergerac, at Fiskhill Correctional Facility in Beacon, New York - and says, "It wasn't hard to imagine that some of the men were being applauded for the first time in their lives." Minister announces 10 Prisons Project
Prisons Minister Rory Stewart has announced a package of measures designed to lift standards at 10 of the most challenging prisons, which have acute problems, saying the project will pave the way for a new ethos across the estate in England and Wales. The project includes £10 million funding to fight drugs, improve security and, crucially, boost leadership capabilities through new training. Find out more

Government consultation on probation services
The Ministry of Justice has announced that current probation contracts, awarded under Transforming Rehabiltation reforms, will be terminated in 2020, two years early, and has opened a consultation in to the future of probation services. The NCJAA is encouraging any of its members that deliver probation services to have their say on the new proposals by the consultation closing date of 21st September 2018. Find out more
Cultural Value Scoping Project
The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) have published their Cultural Value Scoping Project, a report by Dr Patrycja Kaszynska exploring the value of cultural engagement and arts participation, and how research and evidence building in to the subject can be supported in the future. The NCJAA contributed to the project, and the final report includes examples from the NCJAA Evidence Library. Read the full report
Civil Society Strategy
The Office for Civil Society and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has published a report that sets out how government will work with and for civil society in the long-term to create a country that works for everyone. There is much in the strategy relevant to the criminal justice system, the voluntary sector, and for arts and culture. Read the full report
An Independent Review of Sport in Youth and Adult Prisons
Professor Rosie Meek's A Sporting Chance highlights the role that sport and physical activity can play in rehabilitation and reducing reoffending, identifies best practice from across the custodial estate and makes recommendations for enhancing provision. Read the full review
