One to One Maths is a small, charitable trust founded in 2013 to improve and promote numeracy skills in prisons. The basis of the One to One Maths programme is that prisoners who have a good grasp of numeracy skills within the prisons are recruited and prepared in order to provide one to one mentoring to fellow prisoners with limited numeracy abilities. The programme is outside the usual formal education classes of the prison (many prisoners will not involve themselves in any formal, authorised arrangement) with the prisoner to prisoner mentoring being undertaken privately during recreation times in a cell. The charity provides, free of charge, an extensive promotional package to encourage reluctant learners to make their vital first step to ask for help, together with a range of 15 books so that the material for each learner is set at their exact level of understanding thus enabling those prisoners to quickly gain that all importance confidence and a sense of achievement.
