Onwards & Upwards (O&U) was created to break the cycle of reoffending.
Jobs are critical to successful rehabilitation. We know that prison leavers are 70% less likely to reoffend if they find gainful employment. However, when they exit the institution, they meet a wall of mistrust. 75% of businesses will not employ ex-offenders.
O&U will take on this problem directly by creating sustainable businesses - specifically to employ prison leavers and those who would otherwise likely end up there. Our successes will be held up as proof that employing people with a past makes sound business sense.
We are not a business with a purpose. We are a purpose with businesses. The charity will identify opportunities, create the business plans, raise capital, & recruit the leaders to run the businesses. It will also provide support through central functions to the businesses.
Training on the inside, employment on the outside, support on all sides.
