CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Avon and Somerset newsletter
The Avon and Somerset Reducing Re-offending Board has started a newsletter for anyone interested in reducing reoffending in the area. The latest edition includes: updates on the Start to Finish project in North Somerset working with people with complex needs; an approach to understand and respond to Adverse Childhood Experiences in Avon and Somerset; the Criminal Justice Transformation Project which aims to deliver a whole-system review of local criminal justice services; and a local Criminal Justice Online Library. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: women’s mentoring service in Cornwall and Plymouth
Women’s Centre Cornwall offers peer support to women who have offended, or women who are at risk of offending, through the Open Mentoring programme. The relationship developed between mentor and mentee offers the opportunity for longer term support provided by a consistent and trusted woman. Volunteer Mentors may have offended in the past themselves, some may have been at risk of offending or have had life experiences which have drawn them to this work. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: National Probation Service contacts
If you would like to work more closely with the National Probation Service (NPS), such as receiving referrals from them or improving information sharing, we can put you in touch with key contacts in your area. We have been working with the NPS to help it improve its engagement with the voluntary sector in the region. The NPS supervises ‘high risk’ people on probation and also prepares information for courts to inform sentencing. There are new roles in some NPS areas specialising in housing, women, foreign nationals, ex-Armed forces, domestic abuse and other areas. Email Clinks South West Development Officer for more information isabel.livingstone@clinks.org.uk
FUNDING: self-employment and financial education
NatWest’s Skills and Opportunities Fund offers grants of up to £35,000 for organisations to help people start a new business or improve financial capability. Regional priorities for the South West and Wales are to support projects that will help people investigate self-employment and start their own business; to support organisations that help to improve the financial education of disadvantaged people to help them manage their personal finances more effectively; and for organisations that have volunteering opportunities for NatWest staff. This is the last round and the deadline is 21st September. Apply here
CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: criminal justice breakfast
This breakfast event with Shekinah [28th September, Plymouth, £6] will be exploring the theme of criminal justice and the impact on homelessness and poverty. Speakers include Abigail Netcott, Commercial Manager for Mayflower 400, Sarah Carlsen-Browne from Pathfinder (Devon and Cornwall Police) and Soo Brizell from Shekinah will be sharing updates on Shekinah’s partnership with homeless charity Shelter. The breakfast is open to all including businesses, community organisations, and those who support Shekinah and Shelter. Proceeds from the breakfast will be split between Shekinah and Shelter.
