CLINKS UPDATE: our work in the South West
In May we held one of our regular Criminal Justice Forum events. This one focused on co-ordinating support for people facing multiple disadvantage. We heard from Rob Fenwick at Ministry of Justice (MoJ) about the attempts to address these issues over the years, and about a new memorandum of understanding between MoJ and the Avon and Somerset Reducing Reoffending Board to help devolve some powers to the local area to tackle problems locally. Jenny Blackie from Julian House also shared the achievements of a new inter-disciplinary team working together to support some of the most excluded people in Exeter. In other news Clinks South West Development Officer Isabel Livingstone met with the National Probation Service senior leadership team for the region to discuss how they can engage with the voluntary sector. If you are a Clinks member we can offer one-to-one support to help you with your work in the criminal justice system. Email Isabel.livingstone@clinks.org
CLINKS EVENT DOUBLE BILL: Bristol, 12th July 2018
Alternative to custody - engagement not enforcement (AM). Free for Clinks members / £50 non-members.
This regional criminal justice forum will explore how voluntary sector criminal justice services could contribute to better outcomes for individuals at risk of a short custodial sentence. Stephen Whitehead from Centre for Justice Innovation will speak about their research on the rise of community sentences in Scotland while they decline in England and Wales. Sophie Baker from Devon and Cornwall Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner will provide an update on what they are doing to address the decline in community sentences in Devon and Cornwall. Achieving equality and diversity in service user involvement (PM). Clinks members only, £25
In partnership with IF Group, this Service User Involvement Network event will explore how participation can help to address equality and diversity. Involving people with lived experience of the criminal justice system in designing, developing and delivering services is a vital way in which the voluntary sector supports people to change their lives. Yet achieving meaningful and inclusive service user involvement can be hugely challenging. Speakers include Becki Meakin from Shaping Our Lives, a national network of service users and disabled people and leaders in inclusive involvement; and Aisha Lewis and Jason Burrowes from IF Group. CLINKS PARTNER’S EVENT: complex commissioning
The Academy for Social Justice Commissioning is holding ‘Complex commissioning for complex needs: using partnerships, individuals assets and lived experience to build fulfilling lives' [26th June, Bristol, free]. Speakers include special guests with lived experience of multiple and complex needs; Head of Funding Laura Furness from Big Lottery; and Programme Manager Hannah Mahoney from Golden Key, a Bristol-based partnership changing the way services respond to people with complex needs. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: employment opportunity
Bristol Together has a number of vacancies at present. It employs people with convictions to build and renovate property in the Bristol area alongside providing training to help them move on in the job market. They generally employ those who will have the most difficulty in re-joining the workforce due to their past and who may have had long sentences for violent or other offences, or who have been struggling to find work for some time since leaving prison. For more information contact Paul Morgan at paulmorgan@bristoltogether.co.uk
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: sex work and addiction
The Nelson Trust is holding its Annual Conference [21st June, Swindon, free] ‘From SWOP to EXIT - Approaches to transcending street sex work and addiction’. It will explore and advocate for systemic changes in approaches to street-based sex work and addiction. This event is aimed at statutory and voluntary services, community-based street sex worker and addiction services, and health and social work professionals. To book your place please contact melissa.atherton@nelsontrust.com
COMMISSIONING OPPORTUNITY: prison education services
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is changing the way prisons commission education services. It is introducing a ‘Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS)’ which is designed to provide a more flexible way for prison governors to purchase additional education services, for example to try an innovative approach to meet a short-term need, and/or to help build and grow relationships with local employers, educators and providers. MoJ says that the design of the DPS makes it accessible for all kinds of providers. To get involved you need to register on a website called Bravo and complete a market engagement pre-qualification questionnaire. Register your interest here
FUNDING: reducing and preventing anti-social behaviour
The Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner’s Small Grants Scheme has opened, with a deadline of 23rd June. It is open to community groups and other local organisations that can show that they are undertaking or wish to undertake actions that can have a positive impact in reducing or preventing anti-social behaviour. Applicants will need to work in partnership with their local town or parish council or with ward councillors with a named councillor taking the lead on the application process. Grants will be for £250 up to £2,500 per project/organisation. Read more and apply here
FUNDING: young people
The Wakeham Trust provides funding for small-scale projects that are struggling to get funding from elsewhere, but are making a real contribution to the local community. The Trust likes to support projects that encourage the empowerment of ordinary, non-professional people. They are keen to support pilot projects, and those that are run by groups who are usually considered recipients of voluntary action (such as older people or young people involved in the criminal justice system). Grants of between £125 and £2,500 are available. Applications are ongoing. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: scheduled inspections of probation in the region
Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Probation has announced it will be inspecting the National Probation Service South West and South Central area in June-August, and Dorset, Devon and Cornwall Community Rehabilitation Company in September-November 2018. Read more about how they carry out inspections here.
