The latest news from the South West
Welcome to a Clinks newsflash for the South West of England, an occasional round up of the latest news, events and opportunities for Light Lunch readers working in the South West. If you’d prefer not to receive South West-specific newsflashes from Clinks, please do let us know. If you have other colleagues who are based in the region who might like to receive these newsflashes, please email Clinks’ South West Development Officer Isabel.livingstone@clinks.org
This edition includes a blog on probation services in the South West, news from our Good Prison project in South West prisons, and local training and events.
CLINKS NEWS: HMP Dartmoor voluntary sector newsletter
HMP Dartmoor’s voluntary sector co-ordinator has published the project’s first newsletter for voluntary organisations working in the prison. Inside you will find an article written by the Governor Bridie Oakes-Richard, an article written by two volunteers working at HMP Dartmoor along with training information and the cover story entitled ‘A prisoner view.’ Download the newsletter here
CLINKS BLOG: What’s new in probation?
In this blog Clinks Development Officer Isabel Livingstone shares regional updates from the National Probation Service (NPS) and the Community Rehabilitation Companies (CRCs) that were covered at the recent Clinks policy forum. It includes new commissioning powers for the NPS, reflection on the ‘probation services review’ into CRC contracts and information on new strategic forums in the South West. Read the blog here
CLINKS BLOG: ways prisons benefit from having a voluntary sector co-ordinator
In this guest blog Marie Waterman, the Voluntary Sector Co-ordinator at HMP Guys Marsh, highlights the benefit to the prison of her role in bringing voluntary sector services together and supporting their day to day work. The voluntary sector provides essential services to all of our communities including the prison community, assisting the smooth running of prisons and resettlement of prisoners across the UK. Read the blog here.
CLINKS SURVEY: last chance to share your experiences of Transforming Rehabilitation
There are only two days left to respond and we really need to hear your experience of how you have been affected by probation service reforms, whether or not you have contracts to work with probation. This will lead to clear recommendations for government, the Ministry of Justice and probation providers. With further changes happening to the prison and probation services, it's more important than ever that we hear from you. Complete the survey here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Life Cycle wins Robin Corbett Award
Bristol based Life Cycle UK has won a national award for Bike Back – a bicycle refurbishment scheme that supports prisoners to gain skills and qualifications by refurbishing donated bicycles. The Robin Corbett Award for Prisoner Rehabilitation recognises outstanding rehabilitative work with prisoners undertaken by a small charity, working in partnership with prison staff. Read more about Life Cycle here.
CLINKS MEMBER’S TRAINING: supporting children and families
The Barnardo’s Children Affected by Parental Offending (CAPO) engagement service delivers a range of workshops across the South West on supporting children and families affected by family member offending. These include the prison-based Hidden Sentence courses which provide the opportunity for professionals to ‘walk in the footsteps of children visiting family members’. View a list of courses on offer here.
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: social enterprise and recidivism
SERIF is holding a conference [11th May, Swindon, free] that will look at the potential contribution of social enterprise and mutuals to reducing reoffending and to the delivery of the prison reform agenda. Confirmed speakers include Pamela Dow (Ministry of Justice), Fran Findlater (Bounce Back), Fiona Sample (Oswins) and Dave Nicholson (Plowden Lecture). The event will stimulate discussion and debate both about the policy context for social enterprise and mutuals and how they can best be made to work in practice. Find out more and book here
