CLINKS BLOG: making a documentary about Circles
Circles UK CEO Riana Taylor explores some of the key messages that can be taken away from the Sky News documentary about Circles of Support and Accountability, and her experience of making it. With the help of volunteers in local communities, Circles UK work with people with convictions for sexual offences and young people who have engaged in harmful sexual behaviour, to minimise their alienation and support their reintegration. The documentary is sensitive and informative when discussing this difficult topic, and Riana’s experience gives useful insight for others doing similarly complex work. Read the blog here
CLINKS NEWS: meet the team
We have recently welcomed a new staff member to our team, Amanda Sherriff. Amanda is Clinks South West representative for the MEAM coalition. She delivers bespoke support to MEAM approach and Fulfilling Lives areas in the South West to help them improve outcomes for people experiencing multiple disadvantage. Amanda has extensive knowledge and experience of the criminal justice system, including previous work developing an Art Exchange service at HMP Dartmoor, designing and implementing the Check Out Lounge service in HMP Exeter, running a prison time-bank and implementing the Good Prison Project in HMP Dartmoor and HMP Exeter. Meet the team here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: impact of the Homelessness Reduction Act
The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government has launched a call for evidence for views on the implementation of the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017. The Act included prisons, probation providers and young offender institutions as specified public authorities subject to the duty to refer. Clinks will send criminal justice specific information to Homeless Link to inform its response to this consultation. We’re looking for information or case study examples about the impact of the Act, including: the experience of people approaching local authorities for help; what elements of the act are working well and what might need adjustment; and how the implementation of the Act has been resourced. Please send these to Nicola Drinkwater at Nicola.drinkwater@clinks.org by Monday 23rd September.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: inspecting adult women’s prisons
HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) is reviewing and updating its Expectations (the criteria used to inspect) for adult women prisons. This follows its work to review its Expectations for the male prison estate in 2017. Clinks is responding to the consultation and we have held two events with members to inform our submission. If you would like to submit your own response, please contact Darren Wilkinson for more information at darren.wilkinson@hmiprisons.gov.uk. Deadline for submissions is 14th October 2019.
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: ageing prison population
Paul Grainge, CEO of Recoop has been interviewed as part of a Reader’s Digest investigation into the prison system’s ability to cope with the ageing prison population. The article highlights the severe lack of provision for the increasing ageing prison population in many of the UK’s prisons following several interviews with people with experience of working or serving time in prison. Collectively, they paint a similar picture: prisons are struggling to meet the basic needs of the ageing prison population, resulting in deteriorating health and needless suffering. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: examples of service user costs policies
The Women’s Centre Cornwall is developing a policy on paying for food, clothes or other items for women they support, in emergency situations. It would like to see examples of other organisations’ policies and practice on this (formal or informal). In particular, how organisations make decisions about whether to offer this kind of support, and what consideration is given to how offering financial help might affect the relationship between the worker and the person they support (positively or negatively). Please send any examples or experiences to isabel.livingstone@womenscentrecornwall.org.uk
CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: adverse childhood experiences
At this Academy for Social Justice seminar [17th October, London, free] you will hear from local and national speakers on how public health approaches can help prevent and mitigate against adverse experiences in childhood as well as help identify adults needing extra support because of childhood trauma.
