CLINKS NEWS: women's networking forum notes
Clinks has published the notes from the latest women’s networking forum held in March in Manchester. Clinks provided a policy update on probation, progress on the female offender strategy and developments in Wales. Delegates had the opportunity to discuss the shared challenges facing specialist women’s organisations, how organisations can collectively respond and opportunities on the horizon for women’s-only services. Clinks sought delegates’ views on the government’s ‘Tackling Homelessness together’ consultation which helped inform our response. Read the full notes here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: social welfare advice in London
The Advice Services Alliance has been commissioned by the Greater London Authority to conduct an evaluation of the provision of social welfare advice across London. This research aims to identify how the advice sector is responding to the challenges of high demand, funding cuts and welfare reform and is changing to maximise its reach and impact. It will make recommendations on how social welfare advice for Londoners can be strengthened. This is an opportunity for advice providers (voluntary, private, public, pro bono and academic), networks and other stakeholders to influence the future of social welfare advice in the capital. The deadline for responses is 5pm on 9th June. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: expectations for women's prisons
HM Inspectorate of Prisons is reviewing its expectations for women’s prisons over the next six months. A one day event [21st June, HMP Askham Grange near York] will be held in order to begin consultation with key stakeholders. Places are limited but if you are interested in attending, please email Darren.wilkinson@hmiprisons.gov.uk
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: release on temporary license framework
Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) has published a policy framework setting out rules and guidance for prison staff on the use of release on temporary license (ROTL). ROTL allows certain people in primarily open prisons to be released temporarily into the community to carry out activities that support their resettlement, such as paid or voluntary work, or to maintain family ties. The framework aims to increase the use of ROTL by loosening a number of restrictions on who is eligible. It removes restrictions on people having to wait three months after being transferred to open conditions before being considered for ROTL, and streamlines processes to reduce the reliance on additional agencies and boards to approve ROTL. FUNDING: children drawn into crime
The Youth Endowment Fund is looking to fund and evaluate interventions primarily targeting children aged 10-14 who are judged to be at risk of being drawn into crime and violence. Grantees will, as a minimum, need to have a clear theory of change which explains how they reduce offending, informed by available evidence. 1-2 year grants of around £200,000 per year are available. The closing date for applications is 23rd July. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: child protection
The Lucy Faithfull Foundation's training course ‘Assessing the protective skills of mothers, partners and adult carers in interfamilial child sexual abuse' [6th June, Bromsgrove, £150+VAT] will give participants a full overview of adult child sex offenders and include case discussion. Participants will gain the skills to assess a carer's strengths and weaknesses in relation to future protection, and develop an understanding of the often difficult context for non-abusing parents/carers and the effect of denial, both in offenders and carers. The course helps participants consider their own beliefs and responses when assessing non-abusing parents. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: violence in prisons
Project 507 is holding a 'Thinking about violence in prisons' event [11th June, London, from £39] to explore some of the reasons behind violence in prison within the under 18 and 18-25 population. Attendees will examine how prison can impact adolescent development, think about key ways of working with violent children and young adults within the prison system, and develop a trauma-centred approach to thinking about how to reduce violence in prison. Find out more here

BLOG: conference speech
The Tartan Con has published the moving speech he gave at Clinks' annual conference on 9th May, during a panel discussing entitled 'Working together: Amplifying the voice of experts by experience to create change'. He writes, "How can society expect a prisoner to be released after his time in jail NOT angry, NOT ill and NOT mentally scarred if after 120 years we are still treating our prisoners this way? The frustration I feel is only equalled by my anger that my country treats its citizens in such a way. Do we want things to change? Do we as a society not wallow in the troubles of others? The viewing figures of something called EastEnders Street and Coronation Oaks seem to say that we do!!" Read the speech here
