CLINKS NEWS: accessible evidence summaries
Clinks is working with blogger Russell Webster to produce accessible summaries of evidence to better enable the sector to act on evidence. This is part of our strategic plan’s commitment to support the sector with access to evidence and provide support to develop and utilise evidence. We want your views on which topics to produce the first few of these evidence summaries. Vote for your topic using sli.do code #2954. Find out more here
CLINKS EVENTS: regional criminal justice forums
Come along to our 'Regional criminal justice forums' [2nd July, West Yorkshire | 3rd July, Wales | 4th July, North West | 10th July, North East | free] to hear the latest local and national developments in criminal justice, and use your experiences to inform Clinks’ national policy work. The forums allow you to step back from your crucial day-to-day front-line work to see the bigger picture and context in which you are working. The forums will provide an update from the Clinks policy team and there will also be an opportunity to hear the challenges and opportunities facing voluntary sector organisations. There are opportunities to showcase your work at these and future forums. Find out more here
CLINKS BLOG: MPs latest to criticise Transforming Rehabilitation
Last week the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee published its third progress review on the Transforming Rehabilitation (TR) programme. This latest report is highly critical of TR, joining a host of other similarly-phrased reports from the National Audit Office; Dame Glenys Stacey, the Chief Inspector of Probation; and the Justice Select Committee and adds to a growing consensus that TR was poorly designed. In its recommendations the Committee requires the Ministry of Justice to provide, in writing, detail of how a split probation service can work effectively and how it plans to address current failings in any future probation programme. Read Clinks' summary of the report and its recommendations here
CLINKS BLOG: measuring your impact
NPC's James Noble has written a guest blog exploring the challenges of voluntary organisations measuring their impact and introduces the Justice Data Lab. He writes, "The Justice Data Lab is a rare opportunity to get data on the impact of interventions on reoffending. From a distance, a hill might not seem too difficult to climb. Similarly, it is very easy to suggest to voluntary organisations that they should ‘measure their impact’, but when you get up-close you appreciate how hard this is." Read the blog here
CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: work better with the health regulator
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) wants your views to shape relationship guidance which will make clear how they'll work with local voluntary organisations, what to expect from CQC and how you should share information with them. Spare a few minutes so they can understand how you work, what you know about them and what they can do better. Complete the survey here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: resource for prisoners
The new edition of Hardman Trust's Hardman Directory contains a new section on dealing with debt as well as more information on mentoring schemes, ex-offender friendly employers, and Citizens Advice updated information on benefit changes. The 1,350 copies of the print edition will be sent to all prison libraries in the UK with the August edition of Inside Time. The Directory is the ‘go-to’ resource for prisoners, ex-offenders seeking funding support for personal development and resettlement purposes and it is also a guide for those who support them. The e-version is available for free. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: new ministers appointed
Robert Buckland QC MP has been appointed as Minister of State at the Ministry of Justice (including prisons and probation). Paul Maynard MP has been appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice (including court services and legal aid). Clinks welcomes them in their new roles and we look forward to working together with them on behalf of the sector we support. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: procurement information
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has published a web page containing information about procurement at the MoJ and how it is improving procurement opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises. It has information about tendering opportunities, eProcurement, its tender and contractual complaints process, payment of suppliers, and its payment performance. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: worker wellbeing
Frontline Network's annual conference [20th June, London, free] builds on the theme of ‘Wellbeing on the frontline’, focusing on frontline worker wellbeing. They recognise that maintaining positivity and resilience in an ever-changing environment of funding cuts, welfare and organisational reforms can be hard, and lead to potential burnout. Your wellbeing is an area needing sustained focus. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: prison education
Prisoner Learning Alliance's annual conference [3rd September, Milton Keynes, free] is an opportunity to hear about the latest updates in prison education, network, share good practice as well as see the annual Prisoner Learning Alliance Award ceremony. The awards allow serving prisoners to nominate outstanding teachers, officers, instructors, peer mentors, librarians and others who have made an impact to their education inside prison. BLOG: review of education in prisons
Dame Sally Coates has written a blog for the Longford Trust on the newly-introduced reforms which followed her review of education in prison. She writes, "Unlocking Potential, the independent review that I led into prison education at the request of Michael Gove, the then Justice Secretary, was delivered in May 2016. Three years on, some of what was recommended is finally starting to trickle down into our jails." Read the blog here
