CLINKS BLOG: key trends uncovered by our research
What services does our sector deliver? Our latest 'state of the sector in focus' blog looks closer at our research which finds that organisations providing services tailored to meet the specific needs of particular client groups are more likely to be reducing their services; that statutory organisations referring people to the voluntary sector do not provide adequate funding; and the essential but challenging nature of partnership working. CLINKS NEWS: Women's Network Coordinator
Jackie Lowthian has taken up her new role as Clinks' Women’s Network Coordinator. Jackie has an in-depth knowledge of the criminal justice system with particular expertise in relation to vulnerable women. She has extensive experience of voluntary sector work to address the complex, multiple needs of women in criminal justice dating back to 1989 when she managed a Nacro service in London, the Women Prisoners’ Resource Centre, going on from there to develop and run other services for women nationally. She subsequently moved into policy work and research. Jackie is thrilled to now be working alongside colleagues in Clinks to support members and looks forward to engaging widely with organisations offering specialist services to women. She can be contacted on 07891 293093 or by email Jackie.lowthian@clinks.org

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation reform inquiry
Michael Spurr, CEO of HM Prison and Probation Service, and Sir Richard Heaton, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), have been asked questions by the Public Accounts Committee as part of their progress review inquiry on Transforming Rehabilitation. The inquiry is questioning officials from the MoJ about its failure to achieve the objectives of its reforms, to ensure the MoJ acknowledges the root causes and has learnt from these, and to secure commitments that it will reflect its learning in what will follow and is managing risks effectively. Watch the session here

PUBLICATIONS: care leavers leaving prison
The Innovation Unit, with partners including The Prison Reform Trust, has published research into care leavers' experiences. Falling through the gaps finds that fragmented and underfunded systems are failing care leavers who serve prison sentences in custody and the community. For the past six months they have been gathering in-depth stories about people’s experiences, to understand the challenges care leavers face, as well as the strengths and resources they have to draw upon. The report highlights six key insights which describe what is working well and the problems that care leavers often face. Download the report here
BLOG: domestic abuse after TR
Reflecting on the aftermath of Transforming Rehabilitation (TR), Cohort4's Beverley Gilbert has revisited her paper first published in the British Journal of Community Justice's December 2013 special issue which raised concerns that the reforms would jeopardise the work undertaken with perpetrators of domestic abuse. She argues that the TR changes have increased the risk of harm posed to women and children and that the now current system for managing perpetrators of abuse is not fit for purpose.
