CLINKS VACANCY: MEAM Partnerships Manager – South West
We have an exciting opportunity to join the Making Every Adult Matter (MEAM) Local Networks Team. The MEAM Partnerships Manager – South West role [£32,029 plus 6% pension, full time, home based – Bristol and surrounding area] will support around nine local areas in the South West region to better coordinate their services for people facing multiple disadvantage. The role provides a unique opportunity to work with four national charities taking a collaborative approach to addressing some of the most complex and urgent challenges facing our society. You will lead our social media presence, and write e-communications and website content with accuracy and consistency. You will support the Communications Manager to implement our communications strategy and tools to develop our profile and help achieve our strategic objectives. NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE NEWS: did you make it to our annual conference?
Over 100 delegates joined The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance at The Crescent Theatre in Birmingham for its annual conference: Young people in the criminal justice system - how can the arts respond? For all those who couldn’t join us, we live-tweeted from a packed day of workshops, performances and panel discussions, and have published a write-up which includes Justice Minister Edward Argar's video address. CLINKS MEMBERS NEWS: preventing drug related deaths
The Forward Trust has published a report entitled Finding a needle in a haystack: Take Home Naloxone in England. It shows the potential impact that Naloxone can have on reducing drug-related deaths. The Forward Trust instigated a new process to increase the amount of opioid users being released from prison with Take Home Naloxone. This structured approach was first implemented in HMP Lewes, where it had a positive effect on uptake of Naloxone kits by opioid users – with an average of 53% being released with Take Home Naloxone. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: legal support study
Revolving Doors Agency has published a small-scale study of legal support which gathered the perspectives of 30 people with lived experience of the revolving door of personal crisis and crime. The No Justice in the Capital? report explores their experiences of seeking assistance in London for cases that should be eligible for legal aid under the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012. The Criminal Justice Alliance has published a report arguing for community scrutiny of local police stop and search practices. Stop & Scrutinise: How to improve community scrutiny of stop and search is based on a survey of Community Scrutiny Panels in all the police services of England and Wales. Read the report here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: reading in prison
Last year, Shannon Trust commissioned User Voice to talk to men and women in prison about why people in prison who struggle with reading don’t choose to try Shannon Trust’s Reading Plan. User Voice surveyed residents in four prisons and conducted a series of focus groups. Read what they found out here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: biometric technology in prisons
The Ministry of Justice trialled biometric technology, such as iris scanning and facial recognition, to identify visitors at HMPs Hull, Humber and Lindholme, during December 2018 and January 2019. The trials are part of wider measures to tackle increasing drugs and violence in prisons. However, there have been concerns raised about their impact on visitors and families as well as potential racial bias in facial recognition software. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Durham and Tees Valley probation report
Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation has given Durham and Tees Valley Community Rehabilitation Company an overall rating of ‘requires improvement’. Leadership was found to be outstanding and organisational delivery was found to be generally good but case supervision was rated as inadequate or requiring improvement, as was through-the-gate work. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: discrimination of disabled defendants
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has launched a formal inquiry into the experiences of disabled defendants in the criminal justice system in Great Britain. It will focus on those with cognitive impairments, mental health conditions and neuro-diverse conditions including autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Find out more here
FUNDING: employment programme
There is an opportunity to bid for up to £93k from London Borough of Brent to deliver a specialist employment programme to enable ex-offenders in Brent secure employment in good quality jobs which are aligned to their skills and which they want to do. CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: restorative justice
Restorative Justice for All (RJ4All), in partnership with Bizzie Bodies, is holding a public exhibition [8th April, London, donations] to celebrate the art of South East London’s children. It will demonstrate how the values of restorative justice have been used to enhance community cohesion in SE16 London. The event is part of the Children and Art for Unity project, which was a children-led, community cohesion project in Rotherhithe. The project provided educational and recreational activities to marginalised children. Book your place here

RESOURCE: ex-armed services personnel
The Probation Institute has produced an e-learning module entitled Working with Ex-Armed Services Personnel under Supervision. It addresses the importance of identifying veterans in the criminal justice system, key aspects of engaging veterans and the benefits of making appropriate referrals to the armed services charities. It is based on research funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) in 2016/17 carried out by the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies for the Probation Institute and is accessible to all at no charge.
