CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: women in custody
The Prison Reform Trust has published a report, Broken Trust, which finds that over 1,700 women were recalled to prison in England and Wales during the last year. The study, based on in-depth interviews conducted with 24 women, explores why increasing numbers of women are being returned to custody, and what the impact is on them and their families. It finds that the threat of recall for women serving prison sentences of under 12 months is contributing to a breakdown in trust between them and the probation officers responsible for their supervision in the community. Read the report here (PDF)
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: novel drug trends
The Forward Trust held the first 'Novel Drug Trends' conference, which was a partnership between charity and NHS organisations. The event attracted an audience of 130 professionals from a range of fields related to the management of drug misuse and examined the risks and challenges from the newer synthetic Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) – in both community and prison environments. Speaking at the event, Forward’s CEO, Mike Trace, spoke about how “Spice, or NPS, presents a specific challenge for us when designing services. We have to change our treatment systems to adjust to this new pattern of drug use and the introduction of these new substances”. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: community sentencing falling
The Centre for Justice Innovation has published a report entitled Renewing trust: how we can improve the relationship between probation and the courts which looks at the fall in community sentences, which are down by 40% since the beginning of the decade. It explores what has changed in the relationship between sentencers and probation services over the past five years. Read the report here (PDF)
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: overuse of remand for children
Is pre-trial detention of children used as more than a last resort? Transform Justice has published a report called Path of little resistance: is pre-trial detention of children really a last resort? highlighting that remand of children is on the rise again. It argues that court pressures, a rushed process, and a lack of alternatives to custody are leading to overuse of remand, including for very short periods. The report calls for legislation change, greater scrutiny of requests to deny bail, and better training of lawyers and magistrates. Read the report here (PDF)
