LIGHT LUNCH NOTICE
This is the final edition of Light Lunch in 2018. The next edition of Light Lunch will be sent to you on 11th January 2019, to which members can submit their contributions by 12 noon on 9th January.
CLINKS VACANCY: health and justice
We have extended the deadline to apply for our vacancy for Development Officer – Health and Justice [£31,401, London or consultancy, full time fixed term] to encourage applications from consultants. The role co-ordinates Clinks’ work on health and justice policy, and manages Clinks’ involvement in the VCSE Health and Wellbeing Alliance. You will develop relationships with key stakeholders in health and justice, identify strategic opportunities for the voluntary sector in health and care and assess the needs of the voluntary sector and develop ways to meet these. We are particularly interested in applicants with experience or knowledge of health in the justice system, prison, probation and people protected under the Equalities Act (2010). The deadline for applications is 3rd January 2019. Find out more here
CLINKS VACANCY: funding support officer
Clinks has a newly created role of Funding Support Officer [£26,470 pro rata, part time, London] who will work closely with the Head of Strategic Development to support Clinks’ fundraising and income generation work. The post holder will be responsible for collating information for applications and reports to funders, researching new opportunities, and maintaining our records and information on sources of funding. The deadline for applications is 9th January 2019. Find out more here
CLINKS VACANCY: women's network co-ordinator
The Women’s Network Co-ordinator [£33,136 pro rata, part time, London] will be responsible for co-ordinating Clinks’ work supporting, promoting, and representing the women’s sector in the criminal justice system. The post-holder will work with our network of organisations providing specialist services for women in the criminal justice system to ensure we are meeting their needs, sharing their knowledge, and amplifying their voices. Working with a range of stakeholders, the post-holder aims to improve policy and practice in relation to women with experience of or at risk of entering the criminal justice system. This is a new post within Clinks to take forward Clinks’ work and that of Women’s Breakout following our merger in 2017. The deadline for applications is 14th January 2019. Find out more here
CLINKS VACANCY: finance officer
Clinks is looking for a Finance Officer [£28,221 pro rata, part time, London] to join our newly created Corporate Services team. Reporting to the Corporate Services Manager, the Finance Officer will be responsible for all of the day to day transactions and activities of a medium-sized charity. The team carries out all of Clinks’ organisational management functions including financial, governance, HR, IT and other work required by charity and company regulators. The deadline for applications is 11th January 2019. Find out more here
CLINKS VACANCY: senior leader
We’re seeking a senior leader from the voluntary sector to join the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3). The successful candidate will be a senior manager in a voluntary organisation with an income of over £10 million per annum, and with expertise and experience of the commissioning and delivery of public services. The RR3 is a group of senior experts from the voluntary sector helping to build a stronger and more effective partnership with the Ministry of Justice. The chair for the group and its secretariat is provided by Clinks. The deadline for applications is 9am Tuesday 15th January 2019. Find out more here
CLINKS BLOG: the latest on the review of probation
Jessica Mullen, Clinks Head of Policy and Communications, has written a blog with the latest on the review of probation. We recommended that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) continue to engage with and consult the voluntary sector on the design of the new probation programme as it developed. We are very pleased, therefore, to have been involved in ongoing discussions with the department as they analyse the consultation responses and work up the design of the programme in England and Wales. This blog summarises and reflects on key points from a recent MoJ market engagement webinar. Read the blog here
CLINKS NEWS: contribute to a book
Clinks and the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) are seeking responses to the question, “What should happen to people who commit criminal offences?” We are seeking contributions for a book of differing, contrasting and contrary viewpoints. The book is part of the work of the Monument Fellowship - working together over six years to create a legacy for the criminal justice work of the Monument Trust. Contributors can either provide the piece themselves or be interviewed by CEO Anne Fox or a colleague from Clinks. If you would like to be considered, or want to nominate someone else, please send up to 500 words, headed “Monument Fellowship question” describing what you’d aim to cover, to anne.fox@clinks.org by 31st January 2019.
CLINKS NEWS: farmer review
Clinks would like to say thank you to everyone that responded to, and promoted, the Farmer Review call for evidence to women in contact with the criminal justice system and their families. The Farmer Review team received 372 survey responses from women with lived experience, 109 from their families and friends and 15 responses from voluntary organisations. This high response will ensure the voices and experiences of women and their families have a prominent position in the evidence that will be considered by Lord Farmer. As a member of Lord Farmer’s expert panel, Clinks is working to inform the review, which will be submitted to the Ministry of Justice in January.
CLINKS RESPONSE: national standards for children
Clinks responded to the Youth Justice Board’s (YB) consultation on the revised national standards for children in the youth justice system. Clinks welcomes the child first, offender second principle underpinning the revised standards and its aim to promote a childhood removed from the justice system. Our submission focuses on the disproportionate numbers, and unequal outcomes, of children with protected characteristics in the system and the need for reform to address these disparities. Find out more here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE: parliamentary recognition
The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Select Committee held a session on the social impact of participation in culture and sport. Michael Ellis MP praised the work of the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance in championing the importance of arts in the criminal justice system across the government. He also praised the work of voluntary organisations Geese Theatre Company and Clean Break for their work supporting people in prison through arts provision. Watch the meeting here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE EVENT: arts in prisons
The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance is holding a one-day training course [22nd January 2019, Birmingham, £75] to explore some of the questions to consider before embarking on a creative project in prisons. The course aims to provide an overview of the current criminal justice system and a practical insight to working inside prisons. It is aimed at those with an arts background, but with little or no previous experience of working in criminal justice settings. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: therapy dogs in prisons
The Centre for Mental Health has published its last report for 2018, Restoring something lost. The Centre evaluated the work that Rethink is doing with therapy dogs over three prison sites. They found that the therapy dogs had a calming influence on prisoners, helped increase coping skills and strategies and provided a safe space for them to explore ways of expressing and processing emotions. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: interim report published
The government has published its response to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse interim report recommendations. Read the response here (PDF download)

The Avon and Somerset Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is organising the Reducing Reoffending board's inaugural ‘Resolutions Conference’ [10th January 2019, Bridgwater, free]. Co-facilitated by Clinks, the event will consider the question - Is there a better way to co-design, co-bid and co-deliver commissioned reducing reoffending work for Avon and Somerset? What is our 2019 RESOLUTION for working together? For further information or to book, email reducing-reoffending@avonandsomerset.police.uk
