CLINKS EVENT: the state of the sector
We are launching our State of the sector report at an afternoon event [29th November, London, free]. Clinks has been collecting information about how voluntary organisations working in criminal justice are faring for the last six years. Again this year, our research has highlighted the sector’s many successes, as well as uncovering some of the significant challenges organisations face. We’ve included an additional thematic focus to our 2018 research exploring how organisations are recognising and responding to the particular needs and vulnerabilities of people protected under the Equalities Act (2010). Join us to hear the findings and discuss how they impact you and the sector. Email events@clinks.org to book your place
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE EVENT: the youth justice and arts sectors
The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance, along with Arts Connect, is hosting a Christmas networking event for professionals working in arts and criminal justice with young people [6th December, Birmingham, free]. This will be an ideal opportunity to network, gain more insight into their work and be kept informed on future opportunities, whilst also indulging in a festive atmosphere with mince pies and non-alcoholic mulled wine. Find out more here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE BLOG: penned up
In the latest blog from the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance, Penned Up at HMP Downview, David Kendall reflects on how he measures the success of a two week long arts and literature festival at the women's prison. He explains how the festival evolved and shares how the programme made the prisoners feel, how it impacted others involved - the officers, the artists - and the many ways he measured its success. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: inequalities facing young adults
Revolving Doors' podcast Spotlight is available to listen to now. It brings together Police and Crime Commissioners and people with lived experience calling for joint action on mental ill health, drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, domestic abuse and inequalities facing young adults, and demonstrates what can be achieved when agencies and individuals with relevant skills work together. You can listen to the podcast here
CLINKS MEMBER’S BLOG: is employing prison-leavers enough?
‘Employing prison-leavers is key, but not enough’ is the topic of a blog by Sam Boyd, Head of Policy and Communications at Switchback. Writing for Russell Webster, Sam discusses how Switchback find that employment needs to be alongside effective support in order for prison leavers to successfully rehabilitate. He writes, “Among the young men we support, four in 10 face homelessness upon release, over half have a drug or alcohol issue and over two thirds have anger or aggression issues. Many of these challenges are linked to poverty and trauma and are entrenched well before prison. Most prisoners want to work, but holding down a job when so much else is unstable – from family relationships to mental health and housing – is nearly impossible.” Read the blog here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: strengthening probation, building confidence
The Ministry of Justice has released details for market engagement events [11th, 12th, 13th December, London, free] as part of 'Strengthening probation, building confidence' on commercial strategy, transition, estates and IT. You can now book the 11th and 12th of December London events online (scroll to the bottom of the page for more information). Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: secure settings for young people
NHS England has carried out an extensive scoping exercise of secure settings for young people in England, and their access to healthcare. The exercise comes in the form of three papers: the first maps out the provision of secure units for young people; the second focuses on the young people referred to these units; and the third paper reflects on interviews with professionals and parents. Issues with an uneven geographical spread of units are identified, forcing some young people to be placed long distances from their families or homes. Findings are also highly critical of waiting times (over a month in half of all cases) to transfer young people to low and medium secure hospital placements. Find out more here
FUNDING: rape and sexual abuse fund
The 2019-22 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Grant Fund is now open for applications. The value of the contract is £18.6million. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they provide emotional and practical support for victims of rape and other forms of sexual abuse experienced at any point in their life. The service must be free and available whether victims choose to report the crime to police or not, with the aim of helping them to help them cope and, as far as possible, recover from the harm they have experienced. The deadline for applications is 5th December. Find out more here
FUNDING: capacity building
Grants are available of up to £75,000 from Oxfordshire Community Foundation to registered charities for capacity building. The aim of the fund is to strengthen Oxfordshire’s charitable sector. It aims to help high-quality social organisations create a more solid platform from which they can deliver services. It also encourages the adoption of more sustainable models by funding projects that enable a ‘step change’ in financial terms. Grants will be given for projects that can demonstrate realistic plans for increasing reach and impact, and for building longer-term resilience for the future. The deadline for applications is 25th January for the first round. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: how is the criminal justice voluntary sector faring?
If you can’t make the Clinks event on the 29th November, there is another opportunity to hear the results of our State of the sector research [5th December, London, free] at this Academy Of Social Justice Commissioning event. Clinks Policy Manager, Nicola Drinkwater, will speak on what services organisations are delivering - and to who - and how organisations are being funded to do this. Nicola will also discuss Clinks additional thematic focus this year, which examines how organisations are recognising and responding to the particular needs and vulnerabilities of people protected under the Equalities Act (2010), and what barriers they face in doing this. Find out more and book here
OPPORTUNITY: linking open government to criminal justice
The UK Open Government Civil Society Network (UK OGN) is calling for organisations to work with them on linking open government to criminal justice issues. Specifically, they are looking for a partner in a mini-project to develop a short case study demonstrating how transparency, participation and/or accountability have enabled advocacy or defending rights related to criminal justice issues. Also, they are looking for your ideas for a commitment you would like to see the government make on criminal justice that links to transparency, participation, and accountability. There is a small amount of money to support this work which would need to be done by January. If you are interested in this or want to find out more, please contact UK OGN Coordinator, Andreas Pavlou, andreas@involve.org.uk
OPPORTUNITY: host a graduate
Year Here is a full-time postgraduate course in social innovation based in London, and it is looking for criminal justice organisations that may be interested in hosting a Year Here Fellow for a five month placement. Fellows take on a frontline role and, after a few weeks in placement, initiate and lead an Innovation Project. Past innovation projects have included Odyssey Workbook, a therapeutic aid for female survivors of sexual violence and Trading Up, an employability project challenging homeless hostel residents to try their hands at market trading.
