CLINKS BLOG: supporting family ties
In this blog, Clinks Senior Policy Officer, Nicola Drinkwater, discusses Lord Farmer’s work on supporting family ties in criminal justice. The blog summarises key points from the Ministry of Justice’s work to implement the first review and highlights how you can support Lord Farmer’s current review into women’s family ties. She writes, "Lord Farmer has supported the voluntary sector to throw a spotlight on the fundamental importance of supporting family ties for people in the criminal justice system (CJS). The findings and recommendations of the Farmer Review (published in August 2017) into family relationships for men in the CJS were all accepted by the Ministry of Justice." Read the blog here
CLINKS BLOG: insider's view of prisons and probation
This blog from Clinks Membership and Events Officer Adriana Thursby-Pelham looks at the ‘An insider’s view of prisons and probation today’ event which took place on the 17th September. The event introduced the life-changing work of the voluntary sector working in criminal justice to over 100 people from livery companies, funders, and other charitable trusts too. The event was hosted by Alderman William Russell and Anne Fox, Clinks CEO, at the striking Haberdashers Hall in London. Adriana writes, "it gave a flavour of the inspirational work our members do through performances, music and a range of stalls from 16 inspiring and innovative voluntary organisations. It also explained the many challenges they face, one of the biggest of which is funding." Read the blog here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: discussing structural inequalities
Revolving Doors Agency has released its first podcast, In Other Words. It brings together voices from across the sector – including those with lived experience, academics, policy makers and commissioners - to discuss some of today’s pressing issues that contribute to the revolving door of crisis and crime. The first in the three-episode series: ‘Poverty, structural inequalities and the revolving door of crisis and crime’ is now available to download. Download the podcast here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: social care in prison
HM Inspectorate of Prisons and the Care Quality Commission have published Social care in prisons in England and Wales. The report identifies several developments that are good practice in the social care of prisoners. However, there continues to be wide variations between social care services in prisons. The recommendations include: a cross-governmental strategy should be developed; prisons should work with their local authority to ensure needs are being met; and all prisons and local authorities should implement prompt, ongoing and effective systems for identifying the social care needs of prisoners throughout their stay in prison, which should include the ability of prisoners to self-refer. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: preventable deaths in prison
An annual report has been published by Acting Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) Elizabeth Moody. The PPO annual report for 2017-2018 expresses concerns over drug related deaths, rates of suicide and self-harm, mental health, and treatment of older and dying prisoners. It finds prisoners are dying preventable deaths, particularly as a result of the alarming levels of drug abuse in jails, and some prisons and their health providers struggle to learn from investigations into deaths. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: complex commissioning for complex needs
The Academy for Social Justice Commissioning is holding an evening seminar, 'Complex commissioning for complex needs' [6th November, Manchester, free]. According to research by the Lankelly Chase Foundation around 60,000 people in England experience multiple and complex needs. The Big Lottery Fund has invested £112m over eight years to fund partnerships of local organisations to work together and improve services for people with such needs. This seminar will look at what has been learned in the first four years of the programme and how this beneficiary group can best be supported and how that may inform commissioning. Find out more and book here
