CLINKS EVENT: strengthening probation, building confidence
Last opportunity approaching to book for 'Strengthening probation, building confidence' [28th August, London | 4th September, Bridgend | free]. These are the final two of a series of events hosted by Clinks as part of the Ministry of Justice's public consultation on future probation services. These events will provide an overview of the proposals from the Ministry of Justice and an opportunity to feed in your views on how voluntary sector engagement can be improved in future probation services. The Bridgend event will focus specifically on the different arrangements proposed for Wales and how the voluntary sector can be a key part of them. Find out more and book here
CLINKS TRAINING: working and volunteering in prison
Are you new to working in prison? Do you want to work in prison but not sure where to begin? 'Working and volunteering in prison' is a one-day introductory course [6th September, Durham, from £75] which aims to raise awareness of the prison environment and enable voluntary sector staff and volunteers to have meaningful and professional engagement with prisons. This highly participative day, led by an experienced trainer, will combine theory, individual reflection and practical guidance on working in prison and with prisoners. Find out more and book here
CLINKS BLOG: Civil Society Strategy
Clinks Policy Officer, Will Downs, has written a blog summarising the recently released Civil Society Strategy. The strategy provides a long-term vision for how the government can work better with civil society to tackle challenges in society, inform policy and strengthen communities. The blog takes a closer look at the relevant sections of the strategy and how it could impact voluntary organisations working in the criminal justice system. Read the blog here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE EVENT: How can art create a less violent society?
The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) is holding its annual Anne Peaker debate, this year on 'How can art create a less violent society?' [5th October, London, £10]. In what ways does art contribute to violence in society? In what ways does it prevent it? Does art in the criminal justice system contribute to creating a less violent society, or can it do it harm? The debate will be chaired by Alison Frater and Synergy will be performing an extract from their new play ‘Blackout’. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: free theatre training for women
Clean Break is recruiting women for its free specialist theatre programmes for the 2018/19 Season, starting this September. Clean Break's members programme is available to women aged 17 and above who have lived experience of the criminal justice system or are at risk of offending due to drug alcohol or mental health issues. It offers members a foundation in theatre performance, creativity and wellbeing, and opportunities to engage in professional, public facing performance projects. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Minister announces 10 prisons project
Prisons Minister Rory Stewart has announced a package of measures designed to lift standards at 10 of the most challenging prisons, which have acute problems, saying the project will pave the way for a new ethos across the estate in England and Wales. The project will focus on challenging violent and disruptive behaviour and includes £10 million funding to fight drugs, improve security and, crucially, boost leadership capabilities through new training. The 10 prisons will serve as models of excellence for the rest of the estate. Find out more here
FUNDING: career development abroad
Applications are open for The Churchill Fellowship, which funds people to travel for 4-8 weeks abroad, researching a topic of their own choice in any field that can make a difference to their profession or community when they come home. No qualifications are required. All UK citizens resident in the UK aged 18 and over are eligible to apply. The deadline for applications is 18th September. Find out more here
FUNDING: women's mental health
Mind and Agenda have launched a £1.3m women’s mental health peer support grants programme. The programme responds to the needs of disadvantaged women, particularly those experiencing multiple disadvantage, who are frequently under-represented in services. Covering England and Wales, the programme aims to fund: organisations to facilitate peer support initiatives; capacity building; and knowledge ‘Hubs’ to support and promote delivery of women’s mental health peer support. The deadline for applications is 15th October. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: digital storytelling
Stretch Digital is holding 'Tales from the Digital Underground' [13th September, London, free] marking the end of a three year project introducing creative digital into prisons. This symposium will be asking: where next? What is the particular power and relevance of digital storytelling to this community? And how can we utilise the lessons learned to move forward beyond the crisis in our prisons and struggling public services? Guests will have the opportunity to see and discuss a selection of the digital stories made during the project duration, hear a selection of guest talks, a panel discussion and participate in a Q&A. CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: managing conflict
Homeless Link is running 'Managing Conflict, Violence and Aggressive Situations' [17th September, London, from £105]. Designed to help participants develop strategies to safely deal with violent incidents and aggressive behaviour from the people they support, the training is suitable for frontline staff and volunteers in the homelessness and supported housing sector. Pact is holding 'Prisoners’ Families Voices: Pact 120th Anniversary AGM' [2nd October, London, free]. A group of prisoners’ families will talk about their experiences with the Director of Public Sector Prisons, the Police Chief lead for children and young people, and the former Director General of HM Prison Service as part of the event.
