CLINKS BLOG: getting prisoners heard in national policy making
In this guest blog Marie Claire O’Brien of New Leaf Initiative discusses her personal experiences of the criminal justice system. She looks at a new network for prisoners to get their voice heard and contribute to national policy making, the Prisoner Policy Network, launched by the Prison Reform Trust. She writes, "The Prisoner Policy Network is a mechanism for change and for good, and I for one am proud to be a part of it and plan to use it to affect change and innovation wherever possible. Prisoner councils have taken us so far, but to change the world we must think bigger, and this is the chance." Read the blog here

These events will provide an: overview of the proposals from the Ministry of Justice and how you can engage with the consultation process; opportunity to ask the Ministry of Justice questions about the current proposals; opportunity to feed in your views to the Ministry of Justice regarding how voluntary sector engagement can be improved in future probation services; and the opportunity to feed in your views to Clinks’ consultation response. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Advisory Board for Female Offenders
The Expression of Interest process has been launched for membership of the Advisory Board for Female Offenders (ABFO). Chaired by the Minister for women in the criminal justice system, the ABFO brings together government departments, criminal justice agencies and key stakeholders to provide advice and challenge on the development and delivery of female offender policy. Following publication of the Female Offender Strategy (June 2018) the Ministry of Justice is seeking to refresh the Board’s stakeholder membership to ensure the right mix of expertise to oversee delivery of the strategy’s commitments and to provide national leadership on improving outcomes for women in, and at risk of being in contact with the justice system. CRIMINAL JUSTICE NEWS: Civil Society Strategy launched
The government has launched the first Civil Society Strategy in 15 years. It aims to build stronger communities by bringing together businesses, charities and the public sector. It announces a future vision for ‘collaborative commissioning’, and accepts that the contracting of public services has led to a focus on outputs and not the flexibility and relationships that people accessing services need. In the strategy, prisons minister Rory Stewart recognises voluntary organisations as vital partners to prisons and probation services and states commitment to an ‘end to end’ role for the voluntary sector in criminal justice. Clinks will be writing a blog discussing the strategy shortly. Read more here
