CLINKS BLOG: representing organisations in Wales
Clinks has published a guest blog by Martin Blakebrough, CEO of Kaleidoscope, who was recently recruited onto the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3). The RR3 is a platform for leaders from the voluntary sector to engage with the Ministry of Justice, chaired by Clinks. A part of Martin’s role on the group is to represent the experience of voluntary organisations working in the criminal justice system in Wales. This blog looks at Martin’s role in the RR3 and the context which voluntary organisations are working within in Wales. Find out more here
CLINKS VACANCY: Corporate Services Manager
Clinks is seeking a Corporate Services Manager [£45,816 pa, London, full time] to lead Clinks’ internal management work including finance and HR. We are seeking a dynamic individual with excellent relationship building skills to oversee the financial, governance, IT, HR and facilities support and work with the wider staff team and trustees. The role involves providing effective financial management and control of financial assets, establishing, implementing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures and the systems necessary to provide high quality financial support to the organisation. The successful candidate will ensure the appropriate governance arrangements are in place and that the organisation meets its regulatory requirements as a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: latest prison factfile
Prison Reform Trust has published the summer 2018 edition of its Bromley Briefing. The briefing presents the latest facts and figures on sentencing and the use of custody, safety in prisons, prison staffing, people in prison, and rehabilitation and resettlement. Drawn largely from government sources, these facts chart the rise in prison numbers over the last twenty years, inflation in sentencing and the social and economic consequences of the use of custody. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: prisoners' families helpline
Pact has taken over the operation of the national helpline for prisoners' families, funded by HM Prison and Probation Service. The helpline, which has been rebranded as Prisoners’ Families Helpline, offers information, emotional support and signposting to callers. Pact will also run the website, which will include a new webform for visitors to submit their enquiries online and a ‘call back’ request service. The number of the service remains the same - 0808 808 2003. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: what's it like to have a parent in prison?
Children Heard and Seen has created a short film about what it is like to have a parent in prison. The film is from the perspective of Luke, a child supported by a volunteer mentor at the charity, who has a parent in prison. In the film, which was created over the course of a year, Luke interviews the deputy governor of HMP Leicester. Luke says "time feels different when you're 10 years old, and when you're missing someone every minute feels like forever." Watch the video here (approx. 23 mins.)
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: recycling charity's new short film
Recycling Lives has created a candid film following two people's journeys as they end up in, and then leave, prison. Recycling Lives use their commercial operations in recycling and waste management to support and sustain charity programmes for offender rehabilitation, residential support and food redistribution. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: safe and effective restorative justice
The Restorative Justice Council has published a report which summarises the findings from five regional workshops for commissioners of restorative justice services. Funding for restorative justice services is devolved to police and crime commissioners. These workshops provided an opportunity to share notes on what’s working well and how challenges are being met with innovation in different areas. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: case studies on support into employment
Cabinet Office and Ministry of Justice are looking for case studies from public, private and voluntary sector employers and organisations which support ex-offenders to find employment. They would like to improve their understanding of inclusive recruitment practices, employability initiatives, evidence and impact. Respond to the call for evidence by 31st August. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: inspecting probation services
HM Inspectorate of Probation will inspect and rate probation and youth offending services using four ratings: outstanding, good, requires improvement and inadequate. These ratings are underpinned by a new set of evidence-based standards, which were developed in partnership with probation and youth offending service providers. The Inspectorate has created two new videos, featuring the Chief Inspector of Probation Dame Glenys Stacey, to explain the standards and ratings. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: prisoner art exhibition
'I’m Still Here' is the 11th art exhibition [19th September to 4th November, London, free] produced by Koestler Trust in partnership with Southbank Centre. The artworks have been selected by the families of prisoners inside, giving a unique and personal edge to the show which explores what it is like to have a loved one in prison. The exhibition features a diverse range of art, writing and music created by prisoners, secure patients and detainees, as well as people on community sentences, across the UK. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: disproportionality of BAME young men
Wipers Youth CIC is holding a 'Overrepresentation and Disproportionality of BAME Young Men in the Criminal Justice System' training course [20th September, London | 15th October, Manchester | 22nd November, Birmingham | £85]. It examines the issue of racial disproportionality within the youth justice system and explores how the growing disproportionality of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) children and young people in the system can be best addressed. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of this group's distinct needs and how these can be met. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: course for youth professionals
Abused no more, a project coordinated by the IARS International Institute, has launched a CPD-accredited interactive e-learning course. Abused No More: Safeguarding Youth and Empowering Professionals aims to strengthen the skills and competences of youth professionals who are working with marginalised youths especially those who are facing exclusion and discrimination due to gender-based abuse or their cultural backgrounds.
