CLINKS BLOG: future of probation
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced a public consultation on proposals to stabilise the delivery of probation services over the next two years and a longer term strategy for probation services beyond 2020. Clinks’ Jess Mullen has written a blog which takes a close look at the MoJ's proposals and examines how different they truly are to the current system. An open consultation on the future purpose and structure of probation was one of the key recommendations from Clinks' TrackTR research on the voluntary sector's involvement in Transforming Rehabilitation. Read the blog here

CLINKS RESPONSE: transforming the response to domestic abuse
Clinks has responded to HM Government’s consultation on transforming the response to domestic abuse. We welcome the recognition that domestic abuse is often a key factor in women’s involvement in the criminal justice system (CJS) and stress the need for a shared approach across government to responding to victims of domestic abuse. Our response focuses on the importance of early intervention and prevention, as well as diversion from the CJS. Find out more here

It is looking for individual prisoners and prisoner groups to join the network so that they can share their expertise on key issues. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: community awards
The deadline for nominations for The Howard League Community Awards 2018 has been extended to the 31st July. The awards are for the country’s most successful community projects which help to keep people out of the criminal justice system, by providing alternative, proportionate, effective and targeted interventions to help reduce the risk of re-offending. The awards celebrate best practice in diversionary work and champion work in the community that challenges and changes people for the better. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: women in London
The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee has published 'A long way from home - Improving London's response to women in the criminal justice system'. It shows that specialist women’s centres helps to address the causes of offending and that current provision in London falls short of demand. Clinks' response to the call for evidence highlighted the need for a greater focus on diversion and early intervention, and sustained investment in women-centred services. Clinks is pleased to see it recognise the needs and experiences of women, as well as recommending the establishment of a network of women’s centres. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: drugs in prison
Justice Secretary David Gauke has announced a £9 million pilot at HMP Holme House in County Durham to tackle drugs in prison. The Drug Recovery Prison pilot is jointly funded by the Ministry of Justice and NHS England. It aims to stop drugs entering the prison in the first place, while helping people break their habit of substance abuse. Good practice and lessons learned from the pilot - which began in April 2017 and runs until 2020 - will be shared among prisons across the estate. Find out more here
FUNDING: drugs misuse prevention
The Home Office seeks the thoughts and opinions of interested parties on a proposed Drugs Misuse Prevention Initiative grant funding competition. They intend to award up to £175,000 grant funding to a single bidder that can deliver a pilot evidence-based prevention and intervention programme in schools and Pupil Referral Units in England. This is to equip young people with the skills, resilience and resources needed to critically address risky behaviour and develop a core set of values that enable them to make the right decisions to avoid drug misuse. The deadline for responses is 2pm on 9th August. Find out more here
FUNDING: deliver a dream project
The People’s Postcode Lottery’s Dream Trust is looking for three inspiring projects to award funding of up to £1 million each. Not-for-profit organisations are encouraged to apply, but the lead for the project must be a registered charity. Projects must have an original and impactful approach to tackling a serious social issue. The funding targets these key themes: changing lives through early intervention; ending loneliness and social isolation; protecting Britain’s biodiversity; sustainable systems change; and transforming society through sport. The deadline for applications is 31st August. Find out more here
