CLINKS RESPONSE: prison healthcare
Clinks has published a response to the Health and Social Care Committee inquiry into prison healthcare. We drew on evidence gathered through our work in the VCSE Health and Wellbeing Alliance, and from our members working with people in prison. Our response focusses on the challenges prisons and prison healthcare services face in providing care which is equivalent to that offered in the community; and the role the voluntary sector can play in meeting the health and care needs of people in prison and improving continuity of care. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: mothers in prison
The Prison Reform Trust has published a report on the impact of children when their mother goes to prison. What about me? shows that a mother’s imprisonment not only damages the child’s relationship with her, but can affect every area of their lives, including their housing, education, health, and well-being. Key findings within the report include: only one in 20 children whose mother is sent to prison each year is able to stay in the family home; that many children face financial hardship and encounter significant disruption to their lives such as moving school and being separated from brothers and sisters; and that children experience a wide range of emotions as a result of their mother going to prison, including grief, trauma, and shame. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: community transitions
Blenheim has published a report entitled Failure by Design and Disinvestment: the Critical State of Custody-Community Transitions. The report highlights the high mortality rates of opiate dependent prisoners in the immediate post-release period, coupled with high dropout rates in community treatment services, as symptomatic of critical failures in the system. The report quotes the clear recommendations from the government and Public Health England that relate to post-release provision, and discusses how they can be applied. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: award nominations
Nominations for The Howard League Community Awards 2018 close on the 24th July. The awards are for the country’s most successful community projects which help to keep people out of the criminal justice system, by providing alternative, proportionate, effective and targeted interventions to help reduce the risk of re-offending. They will celebrate best practice in diversionary work and champion work in the community that challenges and changes people for the better. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: voices of women
Uprise Policy Forum is hosting an event at the Houses of Parliament on 'The Voices of Women against Violence and Abuse'. It is seeking proposals for workshops, presentations and art performances, especially sessions that focus on solutions and alternatives and those that make connections between the harms of criminal justice and privatisation, austerity and the impact of successive cuts on women’s services. It particularly encourages contributions from current and former prisoners, detainees and their families, and people working to build social services that meet current needs for the most disempowered and vulnerable women in England. The deadline for proposals is 15th July. Find out more here
FUNDING: disadvantaged young people
The William Wates Memorial Trust has grants available to registered charities and not-for-profit organisations for projects that help the most disadvantaged young people (aged 5 to 19 years) to fulfil their potential. To be eligible, projects must: help the most disadvantaged young people keep away from a life of crime and violence; or support projects that engage young people through sport, art and education. Most grants are approximately £30,000 over three years. The deadline for applications is 31st July. Find out more and apply here
FUNDING: youth support
The Wessex Youth Trust has a small amount of funding which it awards in grants to support charitable projects which provide opportunities to help, support and advance children and young people up to the age of 21 years in the UK. There is no set grant limit, but funding should be used where the donations make an enormous difference with a focus on helping those charities who are very rarely in the spotlight, either because they are too small or simply do not have the money or expertise to market themselves. Preference is given to pump-priming projects for development and more extensive fundraising initiatives. Specific project funding requests are preferred. The deadline for applications is 1st November. Find out more and apply here
FUNDING: social venture mentoring
Big Issue Invest has launched its Power Up programme. The lending scheme will offer investment up to £50,000 and mentoring support to up to 15 early stage social ventures across the Midlands. The funding available is to enable community-led businesses to build on the good work they currently do within their communities. Successful applicants will also receive mentoring and business development support for the year-long period. Applications are ongoing. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: open morning
Revolving Doors is holding an open morning [13th July, London, free]. The event is for people with lived experience of the criminal justice system to join its London team. It is looking to work with people with recent experience of the criminal justice system, and people who work in the criminal justice system or related fields, including housing, mental health and drug and alcohol services. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: inclusion health
Friends Families and Travellers and Homeless Link will be hosting a webinar to launch an Inclusion Health Audit Tool for voluntary organisations [16th July, webinar, free]. The kit was developed with support from Clinks and other organisations. The online Inclusion Health Audit Tool will help organisations to audit their engagement with socially excluded groups. Upon completion of the audit tool, organisations will be provided with a unique and tailored guide which will help their organisation to embed action on tackling health inequalities into its everyday activities. Register to take part by emailing sarahsweeney@gypsy-traveller.org
