CLINKS EVENT: equality and diversity in service user involvement
How do we achieve diversity in and through service user involvement? Can participation help to address issues of equality and diversity? At this event [12th July, Bristol, £25 - members only] we will explore equality and diversity in service user involvement. Involving people with lived experience of the criminal justice system in designing, developing and delivering services is a vital way in which the voluntary sector supports people to change their lives. Whether you’re new to service user involvement or have lots of experience in supporting engagement and participation, join us to support, inspire and learn from one another. Find out more and book here
CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: the voluntary sector in Transforming Rehabilitation
The Academy for Social Justice Commissioning is holding 'Under represented, Under pressure and Under resourced: The voluntary sector in Transforming Rehabilitation' [5th July, Leeds, free]. Clinks CEO, Anne Fox, will discuss the voluntary sector’s experience of the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms and the impact this has had on their services, their organisations and the people they support. During the talk Anne will share key findings from the Clinks' final trackTR report and offer recommendations to ensure the voluntary sector is engaged in the development and delivery of future probation services to support effective rehabilitation and resettlement. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: power brands
Khulisa's CEO and Director of Delivery has won an award, placing Khulisa in the Power Brands' Hall of Fame in recognition of its work to tackle social justice in the UK. The annual Power Brands Global awards highlight the success of brands and the individuals behind them. It brings together individuals and brands from the world of politics, entertainment, media and business. Other winners this year include The Cherie Blair Foundation and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: secure schools policy
The Ministry of Justice has published a policy paper on its vision for secure schools. Secure schools will have 60-70 places, be located according to demand and close to the communities they serve. The first two will be in the North West and South East of England. The paper states that they will be more like schools that are secure than prisons that offer education, with visible security features kept to a minimum. The vision is that the schools should offer smooth transition to the community, through temporary release and upon discharge. Read the policy paper here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: secure schools guidance
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has published draft non-statutory guidance for providers on applying to secure schools. Throughout the document MoJ invites comment asking specific questions on three aspects: inspection; what the major cost elements of the school budget would be and how much should be set aside for contingencies; and what aspects external performance measures should monitor. The deadline for responses is 30th July. MoJ will hold an event in July, where potential providers can meet the Secure Schools team, and learn more about and influence the development of the secure schools model. You can read the draft guidance here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: youth custody reform
HM Inspectorate of Prisons is consulting on the inspection expectations for children’s Young Offenders Institutes and welcomes responses from across the voluntary sector. They are aiming to ensure that expectations reflect the youth custody reform agenda and evolving human rights standards, and maximise impact in improving outcomes for children. The deadline for responses is 5th July. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prison education
The Ministry of Justice has opportunities for new providers, charities, colleges and others to work with prisons and some of the country's most disadvantaged learners. In the new approach to education, governors will commission education in line with their establishment’s curriculum plan via two distinct routes: The Prison Education Framework (PEF) and the Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS). The DPS will provide a route for governors to directly commission provision without subcontracting through their PEF provider. They can use it to try an innovative approach to meet a short-term need, and/or to help build and grow relationships with local employers, educators and providers. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: the Young Review
Baroness Lola Young has stepped down as Chair of the Young Review Independent Advisory Group (IAG). Lola has been integral to the Review’s success in both the publication of the report of its findings and the work of the IAG which she has chaired for the past three years. Iqbal Wahhab OBE has been appointed as the new Chair for the renamed National Independent Advisory Group. Iqbal has been actively engaged in the issues facing young black and Muslim people in the criminal justice system for over a decade. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: women's mental health
Wish will be launching a Women's Mental Health Network [8th June, Camden, £13]. 'Turn Up The Volume' will be a display of female voices who all want to see a change in the mental health system. The event, which will include comedy, poetry and music, will raise money for the Network, which will work to improve the current mental health system and criminal justice system for women, including the community services these women use. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: parole reform
The University of Cambridge is holding 'Parole: Law, Policy and Practice in 2018' [2nd July, Cambridge, £30]. The law and practice of parole is in transition. Recent judicial decisions and the government’s review into the law, policy and procedure relating to parole decisions are likely to lead to profound changes. This conference will focus on these recent developments and aims to enrich the responses to the government’s current consultation. Find out more here
FUNDING: help the homeless
Help the Homeless is accepting applications from small and medium-sized UK registered charities with a turnover of less than £1 million per year. Funding is targeted at projects to find practical ways to help disadvantaged individuals return to the community through training or residential facility provision, rather than solely providing short-term shelter. Grants to £5,000 will principally fund capital costs, but may they consider revenue costs if necessary to the project. The deadline for applications is 15th June. Find out more here
FUNDING: small grants for communities
Warburtons is accepting community grants applications. Very small grants of up to £250 to support not-for-profit projects, activities and organisations that have charitable aims and will be of real direct benefit to families across England, Wales and Scotland. The funding is for projects that focus on supporting families that need help the most and fit with Warburtons’ priorities. Community grants can be used for something specific such as buying equipment or supporting a community day. The deadline for applications is 15th November. Find out more here
