CLINKS OPPORTUNITY: showcase your work
Clinks is hosting an event on Monday 17th September in London to showcase the work of our members. This is an opportunity for voluntary organisations working in criminal justice to demonstrate the importance of your work and potentially develop valuable, new relationships. The audience will include people involved with Livery Companies, such as the Haberdashers, Goldsmiths, and the Mercers. There are 110 Livery Companies and together they make a significant contribution to charitable causes. The deadline for applications is 25th May. CLINKS NEWS: show your organisation’s impact
Clinks is hosting a new tool which aims to help voluntary organisations working in the criminal justice system to show their impact. The tool has been designed and built by Optimity Advisors with support from The Monument Trust. You can use the tool to generate a business case - simply answer a series of questions about your service or intervention, and it will generate a business case report which you can save as a PDF. It also has guidance and key considerations on how to show impact. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: supporting young adults into employment
Project 507's Connecting Choices project is able to support 40 unemployed and economically inactive young adults aged 18-24, who have multiple and complex needs from the following Essex towns: Southend-on-Sea; Basildon; Thurrock; Harlow; Jaywick; Clacton. The project works with young adults who have a history of moving in and out of the labour market. This may include individuals with a particular barrier such as health, mental health problems or learning difficulties; people with housing difficulties; people with convictions; and people from ethnic minority groups. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: youth criminal records
Unlock has published 'A life sentence for young people', a report on the impact of criminal records acquired in childhood and early adulthood. It calls for a distinct system for children and a nuanced approach to young adults. Their survey of 318 people finds old and minor criminal records from childhood are routinely disclosed throughout adulthood, working life and beyond. Unlock recommends the government reviews the current system and implements a more proportionate regime. Download the report here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: north east criminal justice awards
The Nepacs Ruth Cranfield Awards 2018 will recognise professionals working with prisoners, ex-prisoners or those sentenced to community punishments in the North East for their efforts to reduce re-offending. They will pay tribute to staff and volunteers who go above and beyond in helping prisoners and their families get through difficult times, giving them the tools and motivation to stay clear of crime in the future. The awards are open to individuals or teams who work in probation, prisons and youth offender institutions, the voluntary sector or other agencies working within criminal justice across the North East. The closing date for nominations is 29th May. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: going above and beyond in criminal justice
The 2018-2019 Butler Trust Awards are now open to nominations. The awards help give credit where it’s due to people who go above and beyond in their work in prisons, probation and youth justice settings, including volunteers and third-party employees. The awards are presented by HRH The Princess Royal at a ceremony normally held in either Buckingham Palace or St James’s Palace. Winners and commendees are also offered places on the Alumni Programme, to help them learn from and build upon their achievements. The deadline for nominations is 30th June. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: community awards
Nominations for the Howard League Community Awards 2018 are now open. The awards are for the country’s most successful community projects which help to keep people out of the criminal justice system, by providing alternative, proportionate, effective and targeted interventions to help reduce the risk of re-offending. They will celebrate best practice in diversionary work and champion work in the community that challenges and changes people for the better. Nominations close on the 24th July. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: funding for people in the justice system
The Hardman Directory 2018/2019 electronic edition is now available to request from the Hardman Trust website. The print edition is available to pre-order and is expected in July. The Directory gives prisoners and people with convictions free access to accurate information on supplementary funding and other forms of financial support that may be available to them for personal development and resettlement purposes. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: parole decisions
The Ministry of Justice is reviewing the law, policy and procedure relating to parole decisions. It is holding an open consultation which covers the transparency of Parole Board decision making; victim involvement in Parole Board hearings; and law, policy, guidance and practice relating to challenges to Parole Board decision making. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation inspection in the south west

CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: role of the prison governor
Prisoners' Education Trust (PET) is holding its annual lecture, entitled ‘International lessons in prison education’ [4th June, London, free]. As Governors prepare to take control of prison education budgets, the event will explore the role of the prison governor and what can be learnt from other countries about how our leaders can drive forward a more rehabilitative culture. Keynote speakers include William Rentzmann, Former Director General of Prisons and Probation, Denmark; Rosemary Ndoh, Warden of Avenal Prison, California; Will Styles, Governor of HMP Norwich and PET’s Head of Policy Nina Champion will share findings from her Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: women's mental health
Wish are launching a Women's Mental Health Network at a #TurnUpTheVolume event [8th June, Camden, £21.50]. The Network is a user-led campaigning platform that will work to improve the current mental health system for women by working cross-sector. Its focus is to improve women’s experience of using statutory services in a range of settings, such as hospitals, prisons, drugs and alcohol, housing, social services, by influencing them to become more gender-specific. The event will include live music, comedy and poetry. The ticket price includes a welcome drink. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: managing sexual abuse
Positive Justice Gloucestershire is holding a public meeting entitled 'A community response to managing sexual abuse' [11th June, Stroud, free]. Practice Manager for Circles South West Pauline Rousseau will speak about Circles of Support and Accountability's community contribution to reducing sex offending, working in close partnership with criminal justice agencies. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: global prison trends
'Global prison trends 2018' is a Penal Reform International event [12th June, London, free] as part of an event series which identifies topical developments and challenges in criminal justice and prison policy and practice from the past 12 months. The event will offer insights into the most urgent emerging issues facing prison systems and governments worldwide. Their Global Prison Trends 2018 report will be presented and copies will be available. The report covers key trends in prison management and prison populations. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: truth, justice and history
Rideout will be part of two events as part of a series of exhibits, workshops, performances and discussions entitled 'The Production of Truth, Justice and History' [13th June, Tate Modern in London, free]. The first will be co-facilitating a 90 minute workshop called The Chamber developed by Faceup Theatre which will explore issues relating to punishment. The second is an exhibition and panel discussion about their recent Past Time project at HMP Hewell which explored the history of prison food. Find out more here
FUNDING: sport for social change
Comic Relief’s Safe, Secure, Settled Fund will provide grants of between £100,000 and £500,000 to projects using sport to improve the lives of children and young people (up to 25 years) who are homeless or living in temporary accommodation to gain skills to lead safe and positive lives. Projects should take a creative approach, use sport as a tool for social change in their approach. They want to hear from organisations who can demonstrate a deep understanding of what makes a positive difference for young people in this situation in their local context. PUBLICATION: charity mergers
'Let's talk mission and merger' is an NPC report on how mergers and sharing models can help charities better achieve their mission. The research, based on interviews with 50 charities, finds that mergers can be a powerful tool to achieve more for causes. It sets out the different models of merger available, and aims to dispel the myth that mergers are always takeovers. It makes recommendations to charities, funders and regulators to enable more mergers to happen. Find out more here
